Care and Share program teaches children to give back to community

PARK HILLS – Students at Central Elementary recently used a lesson in the classroom as a way to give back to the community. As part of the Care and Share program first graders at Central Elementary set up a mock store to go shopping. The store consisted of donated canned goods and donated boxed items.

After the lesson was completed all the items were donated to the Elvins Food Pantry. Leslie Jones, a first grade math teacher, headed up the two-week project.

Turner Chevrolet donated a full-sized pick-up truck, which was filled with food items, to transport the donated items to the pantry. Rev. Eddie Bone, President of the Ministerial Alliance, was on hand Monday to pick up the items.

Last year the project netted a total of 1,094 items for the pantry, while this year that number grew to 1,575.

Ms. Lisa Bowers was the top Kindergarten class with 92 items collected. Ms. Donna Hughes class was the top first grade class with 131 items collected. Mr. Kevin Miller was the top second grade class with 344 items collected.
