Furniture Store locates at The Factory

Moving up town. Arville Petty and Bill Wulfers have moved their furniture and appliance center showroom from their former location on West Karsch to the main floor of The Factory. The main floor is considered to be the first floor level on the west side of the original factory building.

Ice attack. St. Francois County Deputy Sheriff Madge Winch was felled (literally) by last week’s ice storm. Preparing to leave for her shift, Winch slipped on the ice and incurred a broken leg. She is now at home recovering from her accident. Calls and cards appreciated.

The one bright spot for Winch was a visit from her son George Franklin Wilson, who had returned after serving a one-year tour of duty in Iraq. Wilson, who is a graduate of Farmington High School, is a member of the Aniston, Georgia National Guard. While in Iraq he led a Weapons Search and Rescue Team. Wilson has now returned to his home in Aniston.

Rumors are rife. The rumor mill has it the former supertendent of schools, Dr. David Cramp, will soon be making the run for the Democratic nomination for the 106th district Missouri House of Representatives seat.

Heading for the city. The many friends and family members of Al and Marti Kaegel were saddened to learn that the popular couple is planning to move to St. Louis to be near their children and grandchildren. The Kaegels are scheduled to move sometime this spring.

Change of owners. Linda Williams has sold The Olive Tree Gallery and Linen Shop located at 104 West Columbia to Joan Amsden. Amsden and her partner, Doug Coleman, had previously leased the upstairs of the building for their Skye Design business. The Olive Tree Gallery Beauty Shop was sold to Larry Honerkamp, and Debbie Smith, Shelia Miano and Rhonda Cox will continue there as beauticians.

Back from Belize. Keith and Janette Bishop recently returned from a vacation in exotic Belize. While there they took a tour of the temple ruins in the interior of the island country. The Bishops, inveterate travelers, are also planning a longer trip sometime this spring to Hong Kong.

Adding on. If you’ve wondered about the equipment and building materials stacked behind the Masonic Hall on West Columbia Street, the Masons are adding on to the historic Lodge Hall. A large addition is planned for the rear of the building that will house a new lodge hall and store room.

Ready to roll? The Memorial Methodist Seniors are hosting a trip Feb. 19 to the Butterfly House in St. Louis, with lunch at the First Watch Cafe. The seniors then head for the Third Degree Glass Factory in St. Louis on March 16 for a glass-blowing demonstration. For information, cost and/or reservations contact Keith Becker at Memorial United Methodist Church.

Cutting up. The Farmington Chamber of Commerce, like the post office, lets neither rain, nor snow keep them from their appointed rounds of ribbon cuttings. The ceremony was conducted for the Techno Wizards at 120 W. Liberty Street on Feb. 2 and The Tan Company in Maple Valley on Feb. 10.

It’s the law. The Chamber of Commerce also sponsors the one-day seminar “Employment Law for Supervisors & Executives” today, Feb. 12 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Farmington Civic Center. Presenter James N. Foster Jr., J.D. of St. Louis will address such issues as what to say when called for a reference, getting through a sexual harassment investigation and what you really want to know in an interview. It’s a must for employers and Human Resource executives in today’s landmine-filled employment legalities.

Health screening coming up. The Farmington Senior Center is sponsoring a stroke and osteoporosis screening on Wednesday, Feb. 25 by Life Line Screening. The screenings will be held at the Senior Center on Wallace Road. For registration and information call 1-800-710-1882.

An old-fashioned day of fun. This past Saturday saw a large crowd enjoying a return to the Good Old Days at The Factory. A number of local artisans and professionals gave demonstrations on everything from bread making to saddle making. Besides the free demonstrations, Branson craftsman Billy Owens gave two classes in basket weaving. Both classes were quickly filled and participants left proudly displaying their completed baskets. Vick Scism, who operates a basket-weaving booth at The Factory, was the chair for the event.

Loveliest day of the year. This Saturday is the special day to remember loved ones. Many of the local restaurants have planned special evenings to help couples celebrate the day. Among those with romantic menus and moments planned are Allen’s French Quarter, The Black Crow, Cup & Saucer, and The Martin Clardy House. Call ahead for reservations, as it’s a popular time for dining out.

Both St. Paul Lutheran and Memorial Methodist churches are offering Valentine specials, too. St. Paul is hosting a Valentine Dinner and Celebration of Marriage at 7 p.m. at the St. Paul School gym. Call Pastor King at the church for information and reservations.

The Methodist Church is sponsoring “Mom’s Night Out” on Feb. 14 and will provide childcare for age birth to 6th grade for moms and dads who would like to have the opportunity to celebrate the day without the kids. A supper will be provided for the children and entertainment will be provided until 9 p.m. when children must be picked up.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all … and may your mailbox be filled with rememberances.
