Pet Adoption Center has its hands full

FARMINGTON — The Farmington Pet Adoption Center has its hands full. The no-kill shelter has nearly 180 pets it houses and only averages one adoption a day. Director Jayne Wibbels said it’s a blessing the shelter can adopt that many.

“With the overpopulation of dogs and cats we have in this area, it’s a real wonder how we can adopt that many out,” she said. “We have a serious problem of animal abandonment in this county and it’s getting worse. We have to do something about it. I can’t tell you how many calls we get every day from people wanting us to take in new pets. Maybe 10-20 each day. We can’t do it.”

Wibbels said the shelter on average adopts 20 dogs and 20 cats out each month. She said in a good month that average jumps to 30.

“If you own pets please take care of them and have them spayed or neutered,” she said. “The answer isn’t tossing a burlap sack full of puppies into the river or dropping it off on the side of the road at 2 a.m.”

Wibbels and her staff are overwhelmed with unwanted pets. Several of the available pets at the shelter will make terrific family companions or protectors.

A young female chocolate lab named Hershey is in need of a home. She is very affectionate and loves attention.

A 2-year-old female lab mix named Sky is up for adoption. She is very unique because she has two blue eyes. She is friendly and would make a great pet.

A male shepherd mix named Bogi needs a home. This guy loves to be petted and would make a great backyard pet.

The shelter has a 3-year-old male yellow lab named Rusty that needs a home. This guy has a intimidating bark. He is very protective. Once he warms up to people, he loves attention.

A male lab mix named Sammy is in need of a home. This guy is also very friendly and would make a great addition to any home.
