HILLSBORO - Both women's basketball teams, the Jefferson College Lady Vikings and the Mineral Area Lady Cardinals, started off Wednesday's game with a 2-0 record. The two teams also started their conference and Region 16 schedule. In the end, Jeffco would remain undefeated as they toppled Mineral Area by the score of 77-60.

Both teams struggled to get an extensive lead in the first half. The Lady Vikings set the tone of the game as they nailed a three-pointer to start the game. Jeffco would score again before Lady Cardinal Dionn Jackson successfully made two free throws.

Mineral Area's Melissa Pollard sank a two-pointer to narrow the gap. Although the Lady Vikings started to pull away, Jackson came through again as she scored two more free throws and a three-pointer for a Lady Cardinal 9-7 lead.

The two teams traded buckets back and forth and Jeffco led 20-17. Lady Cardinal Robin Sane received a deep pass as she easily made the lay-up to close the gap 20-19. The Lady Vikings sank two free throws to extend their lead. Both teams dueled for points once again before Jeffco racked up five more, which included a three-point shot, to lead 31-25.

Lady Cardinal Anna Brisso made a basket before the Lady Vikings called a time-out. Jeffco nailed one free-throw to gradually pull away from Mineral Area 32-27.

Jackson dashed through defenders as she placed the ball through the net to shorten the lead. Lady Cardinal Erica Anderson successfully dished out two free-throws to help MAC trail by a single point, 32-31. The two teams battled it out, but Mineral Area still trailed the Lady Vikings by one point at the end of the first half, 39-38.

The second half started off similar to the first half as either team still failed to gain a sizable lead. Jeffco once again came out strong as they piled up four points. After both teams temporarily became unsuccessful in their shooting, Sane scored two points to shorten the deficit 43-40. The Lady Vikings nailed two free-throws before Lady Cardinal Sarah Dietiker completed a much-needed, three-point attack to pull to within two points, 45-43.

The Lady Vikings accumulated six points, which granted them some breathing space. Jeffco didn't hold their breath for long as Mineral Area also racked up six points. A three-pointer from the Lady Vikings prevented a possible tie. This was followed by a successful two-pointer from Sane and Alycea Wallace to place the Lady Cards one point behind Jeffco by the score of 54-53.

Jeffco managed to score one free-throw, while Mineral Area sank two for a 55-55 tie. The game only rolled downhill for the Lady Cards as the Lady Vikings scored in bursts of six, seven, five, and four points. Jeffco's defense allowed only five more points before the buzzard rang to end the game at 77-60 in favor of Jeffco.

Sane racked up 19 points for the Lady Cardinals. Jackson scored 14 points while Brisso came up with 10.

Mineral Area, now 2-1, will host Southwest Illinois on Tuesday.
