PARK HILLS - The Mineral Area Cardinals basketball team could not have played their first home game any better. With a mix of solid defense and offense, the Lindenwood J.V. Lions became the Cardinals' first home victim. Mineral Area trotted away with their first home victory, 114-73.

The game started off with the Cardinals jumping ahead for a 9-2 lead. Lindenwoodmade a quickcomeback and tied the game 10-10. Mineral Area's Tremaine Wilkerson scored two points before Cardinals Ray Peterson and Dantwan Chillers both sank two free throws to lead 16-10. A time-out by Lindenwood did no good as Mineral Area's Curtis Muse slammed a dunk through the rim after the break.

The two teams traded buckets until Ryan Burne made both free throws to make the score 26-17. Chillers extended their lead with a successful three-point shot. The Lions piled up four points before DeAlan Hicks also scored four points. Even though Lindenwood made six more points, a pair of successful free-throws from Foster, a basket by Cardinal Kenny Burke, and two back-to-back three-pointers from Foster put Mineral Area up 45-25. Both teams exchanged buckets before the first half ended in favor of the Cardinals, 50-34.

Mineral Area came out fired up to start the second half. After four points were scored by the Cardinals and five made by the Lions, Mineral Area racked up 16 straight points for a quick 70-39 lead. Three points by Lindenwood ended the massive scoring spree. A slam-dunk by Tremaine Wilkerson and a lay-up from Kenny Burke forced a Lindenwood time-out.

Both teams continued to trade points as Mineral Area attempted to extend their lead while Lindenwood tried to catch up. The Cardinals went on a spurt of six points before the Lions made a basket to prevent further damage. Mineral Area fired away again as Tim Perry and Branko Veljovic placed the Cardinals one point away from breaking triple digits. Perry nailed a three-pointer as he broke the 100 point mark and extended Mineral Area's lead to 102-59.

Peterson sank two free-throws before Lindenwood scored five points, which included a three-point shot. As soon as Perry scored another bucket, the Lions retaliated as they sank another three-pointer. Once again, both teams traded points before the final buzzer rang in favor of Mineral Area by the score of 114-73.

Cardinals head coach Corey Tate believes a good defense can make a good offense. "We just played defense," stated Tate. "We let our defense become our offense."

Their defense definitely came through Saturday afternoon as Muse, Wilkerson, and Burne pulled down nine rebounds each for Mineral Area. Wilkerson also made nine steals. On the offensive side of the ball, Foster scored 15 points while Muse had 14. Chillers and Hicks each had four assists.

The Cardinals, now 2-1, hope to defend their home court again when they host Southwest Illinois on Tuesday. The game will start at 7:30 p.m.
