Tigers, Panthers will face each other in quarterfinals

PARK HILLS - The No. 1 seeded Festus Tigers dominated the No. 16 seeded Grandview Eagles Monday in the very first boys' game of the first round of the 49th Annual Bob Sechrest, Jr. Central Christmas Tournament. Festus easily emerged victorious over Grandview by the score of 71-30.

Festus led 29-12 at the end of the first quarter. At the second quarter Grandview scored only six points while Festus made 15. Festus continued to run over Grandview throughout the rest of the contest.

Eric Lawrence led all scorers as he made 27 points for Festus. Ryan Lawrence scored 16 while Cody Stites made 13 for the Tigers. Craig Legens posted a team-high 13 points for Grandview.

In the boys' second game of the day, the No. 8 seeded South Iron Panthers came out on top against the No. 9 seed, the North County Raiders. North County started out slow as a 12-7 lead in favor of South Iron after the first quarter turned out to be a 31-15 game at half-time. The Raiders failed to pick up any lost ground.

South Iron led 7-0 at the start of the first quarter. North County's Kyle Hathman drained a jump shot at the 2:15 mark to put the Raiders on board. The two teams constantly traded points before the quarter ended.

South Iron played strong offensively and defensively as they went on spurts of five, six, and seven points while North County only scored eight points in the second quarter with six of the points coming from free throws.

South Iron went on a 7-0 scoring drive early in the third quarter. North County retaliated as they scored five straight points. Chad Moss and Blankenship each nailed two free throws during the five-point run. Moss and Matt Thompson each sank a three-pointer while South Iron's Jeremy Savage nailed one of his own before the third quarter ended. In that quarter, both squads scored 15 points.

As South Iron's defense wore down in the fourth quarter, both teams scored over 20 points in the final quarter. South Iron commenced the fourth quarter with a 7-0 scoring run that included a three-point shot by Chad Kaempfe for a 53-30 lead. North County later mustered four points before South Iron's Drew Middleton knocked down a three.

The Raiders scored four more points before Boyd Reed of South Iron drained a three-pointer. North County made seven straight points to make it a 61-48 game. Derek Padgett scored four of those points while Blankenship made the remaining three.

Padgett recorded a team-high 16 points for North County while Blankenship followed with 10. Kaempfe and Reed both scored 18 points for South Iron.

North County will play Grandview today at 1 p.m. South Iron and Festus will meet Wednesday at 4 p.m.
