Lady Blackcats, Rebels win consolation championship

PARK HILLS - The final day of the Central Christmas tournament kicked off with the consolation championship games for both boys and girls Friday. On the girls side, the Arcadia Valley Lady Tigers faced off against the Herculaneum Lady Blackcats. Arcadia Valley trailed 32-18 at half-time. Despite a well-played second half by the Lady Tigers, Herculaneum still picked up the win by the score of 51-46.

Herculaneum quickly jumped out to a 6-1 lead at the start of the game. After Kassie Walker sank a jump shot to narrow the gap, the Lady Blackcats drained six consecutive points. Walker knocked down five more points which included a three-pointer, but Herculaneum still led 14-8 after the first quarter.

The Lady Blackcats immediately went on a 13-1 scoring rampage that included a three by Lauren Dunn to commence the second quarter. A matched three-pointer by Arcadia Valley's Tana Franklin and Herculaneum's Erin Steffens closed the first half.

The Lady Tigers came out strong in the second half as they went on a 14-2 scoring drive of their own that included a three-point shot by Brandi Bennett. Herculaneum barely clung to a two-point lead, 36-34, at the end of the quarter.

Arcadia Valley's Dorcas Williams scored the first four points of the final quarter to give the Lady Tigers the lead. A three by Steffens put Herculanueum back in front, but Kylie Stocum made two free throws for Arcadia Valley to take the lead again, but the Lady Blackcats took over from there and kept the lead for good.

Arcadia Valley will host Valley for a conference game on Thursday.

In the boys consolation championship game, the Central Rebels and the North County Raiders brought excitement to fans of both sides. In the end, Central won the consolation championship by the score of 46-43.

North County started off the game with a 9-3 scoring run as Ryan Blankenship scored eight of those points while Kyle Hawkins drained a free throw. The two teams traded baskets, but Matt Watkins of Central sank the only three-pointer, before the first quarter ended by the score of 15-12 in favor of the Raiders.

The Rebels retaliated with a 9-2 scoring run that included four points by Brice Boren for a 21-17 lead. Four free throws by North County tied the game, but Central scored four more points while the Raiders made two before the end of the first half.

Neither team managed to get a demanding lead as points went back and forth throughout most of the third quarter. Near the end of the quarter, North County went on a 5-0 scoring run while Central made a 7-2 scoring drive which included a three by Brock Boren before the end of the third quarter

The Rebels commenced the final quarter strong due to a 9-2 scoring run that included a three-pointer by Watkins to lead 45-35. Although North County played well came back down the final stretch, it just wasn't enough.

Central will host Festus Tuesday. North County will host Fredericktown for a conference match-up Friday.

BOYS 5TH-PLACE GAME

The Festus Tigers had their hands full with the St. Clair Bulldogs in the fifth-place game, but with the use of their long range accuracy, the Tigers came out 49-45 winners

Festus hit five three-pointers to St. Clair's two, made eight free throws to the Bulldogs' three, and also had three players in double digits.

St. Clair hung close up until the end. The No. 3 seed Bulldogs trailed only by a point, 32-31, at the end of the third quarter, but they couldn't manage to get over the hump as the Tigers, the No. 1 seed, stayed just a little bit ahead.
