SEDALIA - The Mineral Area Cardinals were overcome in the second half in their last game, but they made sure it wouldn't happen Saturday as they pulled away at the end for a 65-56 win over the State Fair Roadrunners.

The Cardinals saw a 16 point lead shrink to two points in the closing minutes, but a surge of points by Kenny Burke and Curtis Muse left the Roadrunners in the Cardinals' dust.

The Cardinals started their offense with the three ball. Aaron Jackson and Ryan Burne both hit one on their first shot of the game, and Curtis Muse made a conventional three and the Cardinals went up early at 9-3. State Fair decided to call time to readjust their defense.

The Roadrunners also tried their hand at the long shot, but missed their first four attempts until Brock Perkins hit one, making the score 11-8 and there it stayed for a long time as the referees couldn't keep their whistles silent with 10 fouls being called in the first eight minutes of play.

Aaron Jackson would keep MAC's side of the scoreboard from rusting up as he hit a three and then two free throws to make the score 16-10 in favor of the Cardinals. De Alan Hicks laid one in on the drive, and the Roadrunners felt the need to call another time-out.

Ryan Burne hit two free throws to make it a doubled up score of 20-10. Burne would make another basket on MAC's next possession before State Fair added another three by Gerald Fonzie.

Jonathan Jackson would hit three baskets in a row to give the Cardinals a 29-18 lead. Both teams have trouble making baskets late in the first half, and Coach Corey Tate called time to set his offense for the last four minutes of play.

Aaron Jackson made the offense work as he capped off their first possession with a 15 footer. Later off of an offensive rebound, Jackson made the putback and gave MAC a 33-23 lead with time running down. Rob Kennedy made the last Cardinals shot with six seconds left and MAC took a 36-23 lead to the locker room.

MAC started the second half the same way as the first with Aaron Jackson hitting the three again. State Fair would have none of it as they came back with two threes of their own, but Ryan Burne made a statement as he added his three-pointer into the mix for MAC.

The Cardinals would go up by 16 points, but back-to-back threes by Fonzie dropped the deficit to 11 at 47-36. It would be the start of a 10-2 run for the Roadrunners, and with the score 49-41, Coach Tate called his players to the side with nine minutes still left in the game to try and prevent another comeback by the host team.

Antwon Harris hit his next two shots for the Roadrunners and MAC's lead was virtually gone as Coach Tate again called time with the score 46-49 and still seven minutes left. Harris' shots made it a 14-2 run by the Roadrunners. Harris would add one more to make it a two-point game.

Kenny Burke and Curtis Muse took things over for the Cardinals going down the stretch. Hitting two baskets and then nailing a three, Burke kept the Roadrunners from catching up as Fonzie hit two more threes, and Muse made a couple of jams and a pair of free throws to increase the lead to a three-possession margin.

Burke and Wilkerson would add three more at the free throw line to finish out the Cardinals scoring.

Mineral Area, 15-7, will play next at home on Wednesday against Shawnee of Illinois and then again at home on Saturday against Meramec.
