PARK HILLS - The Shawnee Saints started their game with the Mineral Area Cardinals on a full run as if their bus from Ullin, Illinois had not even stopped. The Cardinals, at the start of the game, looked like the bus might even run over them, but when they collected themselves, Mineral Area got their 'A Game' in gear and the result was a 79-58 runaway that left the Saints at the station.
The Saints ran out to an 8-2 lead as Mineral Area had its problems on offense, calling for a time-out to get readjusted. The Saints plunged on to a bigger lead, hitting the hoop on nearly every trip down the floor until finally stalling out at 21-12.
Terry Britton got the Cardinals rolling as he scored five quick points on with a two and three-pointer on consecutive trips down the floor, and Shawnee called for time to do some readjusting of their own. Tremaine Wilkerson stole the ball from the Saints at half court after the inbound, and then fed Britton for a breakaway basket to make it a two-point game.
Ryan Byrne hit the capper to give MAC the lead with a three-pointer from the left corner. But just a couple of plays later Rob Kennedy crashed to the floor in a collision under Shawnee's basket that left the 6'8" clutching his knee. Kennedy had to be escorted from the floor by his teammates, and his condition was unknown at press time.
Shawnee was able to regain the lead and stretch out a little breathing room before Mineral Area closed back to within three at the half 29-26.
It took a while for MAC to catch the Saints in the second half. Ray Peterson cleaned the boards with a defensive rebound and then made the lay-up on the other end to tie the game at 36-36. The Cardinals tied the game up again at 42-42, and took the lead for good on a three by Kenny Burke.
The lead seemed to shift the Cardinals into high gear. The Cardinals worked the ball to Jonathan Jackson down low and the 6'8" freshman answered with a slam from the left side to make the score 49-46. Shawnee turned the ball over on their next possession and their coach screamed for and was awarded a time-out before the inbounds pass by the Cardinals.
When play resumed, Wilkerson took the pass and made a five foot attempt which he followed up and got the tip to make it a five-point lead. The Cardinals stole the ball on Shawnee's next possession and a quick pass to Wilkerson gave him an open basket which he made the deposit with no return.
Aaron Jackson hit a three to give the Cardinals a 56-48 lead and Shawnee's ballhandling got very sloppy, with the Cardinals capitalizing on it to go up 63-50.
The Saints began to take potshots from long range, resulting only in Mineral Area rebounds. The Cardinals, however, kept taking the ball to the hoop with huge success, shooting nearly 67 percent from the floor in the second half. Overall the Cardinals were 31-63 from the floor for the game
With only Britton having more than four points (7) in the first half, Aaron Jackson, Jonathan Jackson, Wilkerson and Muse all scored more than eight points in the second half. Britton would score five more in the second half with his only basket from the field on a rebound of his own free throw which Britton collected at the right baseline and laid it back in.
Shawnee had two equal halves of 29 points each. Mineral Area scored 53 points in the second half alone.
Mineral Area, 16-7, will be back in action in a home game against 14th-ranked Meramec on Saturday following the Lady Cardinals game which starts at 5 p.m.
Shawnee 29 29 - 58
Mineral Area 26 53 - 79
