BISMARCK - The first round of the MAAA Conference girls tournament was played at Bismarck High School on Saturday, and all three games for the most part were all one-sided with the closest score of the day being an 18-point difference. Games should be a little tighter as the tournament proceeds into the upper rounds to be played at Mineral Area College all week long.

Bismarck 63, Central 45

At the start, the game looked to be close one between the No. 8 seed Bismarck Lady Indians and the No. 9 seed Central Lady Rebels, but that only appeared so in the first quarter as Bismarck jumped ahead in quarter two and went on to a 63-45 win.

Central's Tausha Petty opened up the scoring with a three-pointer, but what would be a jump-start for the Lady Rebels would play a big part of their downfall later in the game. The three would stand for two minutes until Bismarck's Karah Faulkner would hit a two to get the Lady Indians on the board.

Central 's press took its toll as they forced two turnovers by Bismarck, however the Lady Rebels could not covert the takeaways into points, and Chelsey Morris made them pay as she hit a three and then a two for Bismarck. The Lady Indians took the lead for good at 7-3.

Central would close to within one twice before the end of the quarter, but their turnovers hurt their chances of regaining the lead.

Chelsey Politte set the tone for the second quarter as she hit a trey to start things off. The three-pointer started a seven-point run for the Lady Indians, and Central coach Craig Allen called time to try and find a way to keep the game from getting out of hand. It was to no avail as Bismarck scored the next three baskets to take a 14-point lead.

Central scored the next four points on two free throws by Petty and a lone basket by Lindsey Harris. It was the Lady Rebels only points of the quarter as Politte finished out the quarter a basket to make the score 26-14.

The Lady Rebels were able to keep the margin of Bismarck's lead to 14 points in the third quarter, but only because they shot the ball a lot more. Making 5 out of 21 shots from the floor, Central was able to nearly match the scoring of Bismarck which was 8-14 in the quarter.

Central continued to launch the three-ball, but to no avail as they missed on 20 straight attempts after the opening three by Petty. The results of their missed shots provided the Lady Indians the rebounds and the opportunity to score, which they usually did.

Even though Central outrebounded Bismarck 44-32, the rebounding was actually in favor of Bismarck as Central recaptured 25 of their own missed shots and Bismarck not needing to, pulled down 26 defensive rebounds to Central's 19. The reason being that the Lady Rebels were only 14-75 from the floor while the Lady Indians took only 50 shots and made 23.

Bismarck looked to be in a little trouble as two of their top scorers fouled out, but Central could not capitalize on it as they were having their shooting woes and on defense the Lady Rebels were also racking up the fouls. Politte, Bismarck's top-scorer, went to the line 14 times, making 11 of the shots to help her score 26 points in the game.

Central's Kristen Gunder lit things up for the Lady Rebels inside, making nine of her 13 points in the fourth quarter to lead her team's scoring.

Faulkner led Bismarck in rebounds with 11 before fouling out early in the fourth quarter. Allison Douglas led Central in rebounding with 18, but sat out most of the fourth quarter.

Bismarck will play Farmington in the quarterfinals on Monday at 4 p.m. at Mineral Area College. Central receives a bye and advances to the consolation final on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Central High School.

The Hunters led by only 11-8 after the first eight minutes, but the Hunters made 11 straight points in the second quarter before West County would score after four minutes were gone. Sara Flieg hit a three and the lead blossomed to 15 points at the half. Flieg scored 26 points to lead all scorers.
