Missouri high school wrestling teams were involved in their respective district tournaments Friday evening and Saturday and locally the four MAAA schools which have wrestling teams were involved in two districts: Class 3 - Farmington and North County, and Class 2 Ste. Genevieve and Central.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class from each district advance on to the state tournament at Missouri University to be held in the Hearnes Center this Thursday through Saturday. This is the first year that a sectional tournament will not be wrestled between the district and state tournaments.

CLASS 3

The Farmington Knights qualified nine wrestlers for the state tournament in finishing second in the District 1 Tournament held at the Farmington Centene Center. The Knights scored a total of 197 points , second only to Eureka's 201.5. Eureka qualified 11 wrestlers for state.

Pacific was third at 112, and Cape Central took fourth at 101. North County placed seventh at 88 and qualified three wrestlers for state.

Farmington had five wrestlers place first in the tournament. Joey Newland, at 112 pounds, won by a fall in 5:51, Craig Wilson (119) won by a fall in 4:27, Kevin King (145) won by a fall in 42 seconds, Tyler Epstein (189) won by disqualification, and Jacob Hise (215) won by fall in 1:03.

Michael Zaricor (140) placed second, Nicholas Hoehn (125) placed third, and Max Robinson (130) and Justin Hill (135) both finished in fourth.

North County had two first-place winners with Jesse Coale (140) winning a 13-7 decision, and Jason Winckel (152) winning by a fall in 1:42. Jacob Vogt (145) took second place.

CLASS 2

The addition of another class (Class 4) created a reconstruction of all the classes and with that the Ste. Genevieve Dragons and the Central Rebels were both moved into the same district from their previous districts.

Ste. Genevieve was dropped down to the Class 2, and Central, even though they stayed in the same class, was moved into a different district.

Ste. Genevieve captured first place as a team with 181.5 points, but had to wait for the very last match to claim the victory. De Soto, which came in second at 177.5, needed either a win in the 189 third-place match or a win in the 275 championship match, but neither came into fruition.

Windsor was third at 160 points, and Affton was fourth at 148. Central, at 60.5, placed ninth out of 13 teams.

The Rebels, who have had good success in getting plenty of wrestlers to advance from districts into sectionals the past few years, were only able to qualify two wrestlers for state this year.

"It was quite different than what we've been used to in the past years," said Central coach Scott Aholt.

Brandon Lindsey (32-6) placed second in the 125 weight class, and Jack Hampton (32-8) came in third in the 112 weight class.

Five Ste. Genevieve wrestlers took first in their respective weight classes. At 112 Curt Gegg (29-14) won his first-place match by a fall in 5:09, at 135 Adam Johnson (28-15) won a 4-2 decision, at 145 Zach Bader (30-13) won a 15-7 major decision, at 160 Taylor Huck (30-13) won a 7-2 decision, and at 171 Tanner Wolk (41-1) won by default.

At 152 Randy Lurk (19-18) placed second, at 130 Vince Wolk took third, and at 119 Zach Harman (23-14) and at 189 Blaine Gamache (19-22) both took fourth place.
