PARK HILLS - The Mineral Area Lady Cardinals had a rough start against the Washington University J.V. Bearcats on Monday night. Mineral Area missed several shots, and went five for 15 from the charity stripe in the first half. The Lady Cardinals made several improvements in the second half, and Mineral Area triumphed 68-49.
The Lady Cardinals took a 7-4 lead on a lay-up by Natalie Rozenfeld and Mayra Rios. Washington took the lead on two lay-ups by Jill Brandt and a basket by Andi Strauss. Mineral Area took the lead again on a couple of free throws by Britany Sublett and a three-pointer by Erica Anderson for a 14-12 contest. The Bearcats went on a 8-2 scoring run to take the lead once again.
The Lady Cardinals scored five straight points for a 21-20 edge. Washington went on another 8-2 run, but a bucket by Rozenfeld, Anderson, and Fran Henderson tied the game at 28 apiece at the end of the first half.
Mineral Area came out strong in the second half and scored the first 13 points for a 41-28 advantage. Henderson recorded six of those points, and Dionn Jackson nailed a three-pointer. After a few exchanges of tallies, Sublett and Dawn Leathers added a basket, and DeAnna Anderson came through with a lay-up for a 55-38 lead.
Rovina Broomfield slightly narrowed the gap with a lay-up, but a jump shot by DeAnna and Erica Anderson, and a lay-up from Rios boosted the Lady Cardinals to a 19-point lead. Neicole Whitiker and Strauss traded a three-point shot before DeAnna Anderson chipped in a jump shot before the end of the game.
“We hit our first couple of shots at the beginning of the game, but then we got kind of cold,” commented MAC coach Lana LaBruyere. “We shot horrible free throws. We got the opportunity to score on the line, but we didn't capitalize on it. In the second half, things rolled a little bit better. We hit our shots and kind of kept the game moving.”
“We've got so much work to do,” added LaBruyere about her team's seven for 22 free-throw shooting. “Free throws can make you or break you, and they just about broke us this game.”
Brandt led all scorers with 16 points. Henderson finished with a team-high 12 points for the Lady Cardinals.
Mineral Area, now 5-1, will host John Wood as part of the MAC Thanksgiving Classic on Friday at 3 p.m.
