Cardinals remain undefeated with dominant play

PARK HILLS - The Mineral Area Cardinals played solid defense and offense in Saturday's contest against the Spoon River Crusaders. Mineral Area converted on many scoring chances and prevented the Crusaders from doing the same. The Cardinals dominated with a 112-74 victory.
Mineral Area outrebounded Spoon River 35-18. The Cardinals drained 10 three pointers out of 15 attempts.
Mineral Area quickly jumped to an 8-5 edge on a lay-up and a dunk by DeAlan Hicks. The Cardinals quickly went on a 11-1 run on a dunk by Curtis Muse and a basket by Tremaine Wilkerson and Jonathan Jackson to boost Mineral Area to a dominating 19-6 edge. Both teams traded points before Tony Webb knocked down a three-point shot for a 27-14 lead.
Spoon River's Tad Sterling and Webb traded a three-pointers before Webb added two more threes for a 38-24 lead. DeAndre Brock drained two three-point shots and Tyler Schrick added one for the Crusaders to narrow the deficit to 43-33. Mineral Area's T.J. Britton added a couple of free throws, and Jackson chipped in a pair of buckets before the end of the half. The Cardinals led 49-35 at the first half.
Webb recorded 16 points after the first half, which included four three pointers. Matthew Koster had 11 points for Spoon River in the first half with one three-point shot.
Mineral Area's Rickey Claitt nailed a three pointer, and Dontavis Jones added a jump shot to kick off the second half. The Cardinals later went on a dominating 20-2 scoring run for a comfortable 75-40 advantage. Hicks and Claitt both had a three during the lengthy run. Muse dunked the ball and Claitt and Webb came through with a jump shot to extend their lead.
The Crusaders retaliated with nine straight points with the last six tallies coming from back-to-back three pointers by Brock and Sam Dever. Claitt countered with a triple, and Ralph Mata set up an alley oop to Hicks for a monstrous 91-54 lead. Wilkerson pushed the Cardinals to the triple-digit mark on a lay-up and a three pointer for a 103-59 advantage.
Spoon River went on a small 7-2 run to slightly narrow the gap. Jackson converted on a three-point play, and Chad Henderson scored the Cardinals' last two points on a lay-up. Wesley Ware chipped in four more points for the Crusaders before the end of the contest.
Webb and Brock finished with a game-high 22 points for their respective teams, and Claitt closely trailed with 19 for the Cardinals. Wilkerson contributed 16 points.
Mineral Area, now 8-0, will host Lewis and Clark on Wednesday.
