PARK HILLS - Saturday was a big day for basketball as Mineral Area College held the 47th Annual St. Francois County Rotary Shootout. The day was kicked off with a contest between the Farmington Knightettes and the Oakville Lady Tigers. Oakville triumphed over the Knightettes 51-35.
The Lady Tigers scored the first eight points of the contest, with Sherry Zehner recording six of those points, before Farmington called a time out. After both teams exchanged baskets, the Lady Tigers tacked on six straight points to take a 19-8 advantage. Sydney Winslow and Danielle Littrell both chipped in a pair of points for the Knightettes, and Winslow capped off the quarter with a lay-up. Oakville led 19-14.
Farmington allowed the Lady Tigers only one bucket in the entire second quarter. Littrell and Taylor Jenson both knocked down a shot, and Farmington's Natalie Sago drained a three pointer before the end of the half. The two teams were tied 21-21 at the half.
The Lady Tigers were able to make several easy shots in the post and because of this, Oakville kicked off the second half with a 14-2 scoring run to take a 34-23 lead. Zehner scored half of those points which included a three. The Lady Tigers held a 40-30 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
Oakville started the final quarter with a sizable 8-0 scoring run. Faith Zabek had five of those points. The Knightettes added five more points and the Lady Tigers came through with three more before the end of the game.
Zehner led all scorers with 15 points, and Zabek contributed 12. Winslow finished with a team-high nine points for Farmington.
The Knightettes (3-2) will host Sikeston on Monday.
The first boys basketball game of the day featured the Sullivan Eagles and the North County Raiders. Sullivan turned the ball over several times, and the Raiders pulled down plenty of defensive rebounds to prevent the Eagles from too many second chances in scoring. North County dominated with a 59-31 victory.
Sullivan took an early 4-2 edge, but this was the only lead the Eagles held the entire night. Two baskets by Tyler Beers and one by Chad Moss gave the Raiders an 8-4 lead. North County's Adam Ketcherside and Sullivan's Adam Strauser both matched a three-point shot before Beers added three points. Beers and Tyler Crouch exchanged a three pointer, and the Raiders led 17-12 after the first quarter.
The Eagles were held to only three field goals in the second quarter. Halfway through the quarter, North County piled up nine straight points for a 32-16 advantage. Crouch drained a three-point shot before the conclusion of the first half.
Although Strauser and Cody Davis scored the first two buckets for the Eagles in the third quarter, Sullivan only scored two more points. The Raiders went on a dominating 14-2 scoring run before the end of the third quarter. Chuck Schwartz had a three pointer, and Moss nailed two jump shots during the run. North County possessed a 46-25 lead after three quarters of play.
Schwartz opened the fourth quarter with a three pointer and a lay-up. Nick Counts and Matt Thompson came through with back-to-back three pointers for North County. The Raiders held the Eagles to only six points in the last quarter.
Schwartz finished with a game-high 12 points, and Beers closely followed with 11. Zach Jenkins scored seven points for Sullivan.
North County (3-2) will travel to St. Vincent on Tuesday.
