Lady Cardinals extend winning streak to six games

PARK HILLS - The 15th ranked Mineral Area Lady Cardinals took on the Shawnee Lady Saints on Saturday as part of the Rotary Shootout. There were several times where Shawnee struggled with their shooting which led to several scoring runs by Mineral Area. The Lady Cardinals dominated with a convincing 83-64 win over the Lady Saints.

Although Shawnee took a 6-2 edge, a basket by Mayra Rios and Dionn Jackson tied the game. The Lady Saints regained the lead on two free throws by Shaleem Griffin and a lay-up by Tiffany Scales, but this was their last lead of the day. Mineral Area went on a 10-2 scoring run for a 16-12 advantage.

Britany Sublett scored half of those points. Secrets Roberts countered with a pair of free throws, but Jackson scored five straight points as part of a 10-0 run for a 26-14 lead. Neicole Whitiker capped off the run with a three-point shot. A basket and a free throw by Scales was matched by a three-pointer from Dawn Leathers.

Both teams exchanged seven points before the Lady Cardinals went on a small 6-2 scoring run for a 43-29 contest. At the end of the half, Mineral Area was up 45-33.

The Lady Saints went on an 8-2 run at the start of the second half to narrow the deficit to six points. Shawnee's shooting gave them fits, and the Lady Cardinals went on a sizable 17-4 scoring run for a 64-45 game. Erica Anderson knocked down a three, and seven other Lady Cardinals contributed to the run.

Griffin broke up the run with a lay-up, but Mineral Area continued to rack up the points with a 9-3 run for a 73-50 advantage. Sublett and Marquette Hollins both scored four points in the run. Whitiker later knocked down her second three pointer of the game, and Natalie Rozenfeld and Rios added a bucket for an 81-58 lead.

Shawnee scored six straight points on a three by Kayla Cooper and a basket and a free throw from Scales. Rozenfeld came through with one more field goal before the end of the contest.

Mineral Area shot under .500 from the charity stripe as they converted on nine out of 20 free throws. The Lady Saints went 20-24 from the free-throw line.

Jackson and Sublett both scored 18 points for the Lady Cardinals. Scales led Shawnee in points with 14.

Mineral Area, now 10-1, will host Kaskaskia on Saturday.
