Elementary school students have an opportunity to help senior citizens this summer by bringing them their noon meals.
Children in grades K-5 and their parents or guardians are invited to cover Meals on Wheels routes for vacationing volunteers this summer at the Park Hills Senior. Those who cannot run routes may volunteer in the center as greeters or by answering phones, helping to pack meals, or working in the drink area.
Participants in the Volunteers on Vacation program will have a chance to win one of three big prizes while they do something kind for others.
“Any child who does any type of volunteer work gets to put their name in the basket for prizes,” Executive Director Holly Buxton said. “We have some awesome prizes! Everyone who participates will get a certificate of appreciation.”
The program begins July 2 and runs through Aug. 10. Each Meals on Wheels route lasts from one hour to about one hour and a half, beginning from 9:30-10 a.m. The Senior Center has routes in Desloge (North County School District), Leadwood (West County), and Park Hills (Central).
Volunteer work at the center usually is for an hour, Buxton estimated.
Each time students deliver meals or volunteer in the center, they will put their names in a basket to win a prize. The prizes and awards will be presented to participants Aug. 11 at a celebratory pool party at the Park Hills pool. The celebration, which includes refreshments, begins at 6 p.m.
Anyone interested in participating in the Volunteers on Vacation should call Buxton at 431-4974 to get on the route schedule. The Senior Center is located at 224 West Main St., Park Hills.
