soul for silver...they are not just noise

“The fans make it good. Without them, it’s just noise.”

That’s what one member of Soul For Silver had to say about their music.

I tend to disagree. They sound really good — fans or not.

Members are Thomas Walton of Park Hills, vocals; Mike Naeger of Ste. Genevieve and Dan Crocker of Bonne Terre, guitar; Keith Johnson of Farmington, bass; and Kerry LaChance of Farmington, drums.

If those names sound familiar, it’s because they play with other groups, too. Thomas also is the lead singer and guitarist for Seeing Seven. Kerry LaChance had played with This Side Up but recently left that band.

Soul For Silver (which means it is human to betray) is a progressive rock/metal band. Many people say they sound like Tool or A Perfect Circle.

How it got started

Keith and Dan met when they were teens and began playing together. About 10 years ago, they met Kerry, a teenage drummer a pastor told them about. Together, they played praise and worship music for the Gathering Place Church.

In fall of 2002, Soul For Silver began, adding Mike in 2003 and Thomas last year.

One constant drama for the group has been “will Kerry be deployed?” Kerry is a member of the military and has been deployed a couple of times but has never made it to Iraq.

“Friendship wise, we are very close,” Keith said. “We spend every weekend together and talk throughout the week. Our relationships go as far back as 1990 between most of us so we have been close for a long time.”

Lyrically, they have all contributed to their songs.

“Musically, Dan brings ideas and a foundation to the group and everyone expands on their particular part,” Keith said. “Songs typically take awhile for us to create because, most of the time, there are very intricate parts that we all have our ideas on what we want to play. Most of our music comes from an emotion or an image of how we want the music to feel.”

Keith said they have some studio dates with Jason McEntire this fall to begin recording a CD. Until then, they are perfecting their songs and writing new ones all of the time.
