'Get Your Kicks' with Route 67
Thursday, October 04, 2007
They’ve all done the club scene and road shows but the local band, Route 67, prefers more of a family atmosphere.

Members of Route 67 are Randy Grogan, Colleen Kay Moore, Mike Tawfall and Jim Gallagher.

All of them have played together at one point in time in local bands but came together as a band in 2002. They play a mix of traditional and some modern country and classic rock.

Randy and his sister, Colleen, are the lead singers of Route 67. Randy plays rhythm guitar and Colleen plays the bass guitar. Mike plays lead guitar while Jim plays drums.

Mike started playing the guitar when he was 5 years old. His parents noticed he really enjoyed watching the musicians at church.

“I just stuck with it and at 42, I’m still playing,” he said.

When he was just 12 or 13, Mike started playing in bands with Colleen and Randy. The bands were called the Wooden Nickel Band and the Sundance Band.

“Jim and I have known each other for 20 years,” Mike added.

Mike moved to Branson in 1984 and played with the Plummer Family at their theater there. He moved back to Farmington six years ago and now works full time for Arch Air Medical Service.

Colleen said she and her older brother started playing music when she was 8 years old. She has a self-titled CD available at the Plummer Family Theatre.

Jim, who is the only one from Desloge (and not from Farmington), started playing the drums when he was 5. He started playing at church and then played for local gospel bands.

“I did that for a long time,” he said.

Together and individually, they’ve opened for a lot of big names like Gene Watson, Ray Price, the Bellamy Brothers, Connie Smith, and Hank Thompson. They’ve all traveled and done road shows.

“We all have a passion for music,” Colleen said. “We’ve spent most of our lives as professional musicians.”

She said while they do it more as a hobby now, they take it as seriously as they ever have.

“I wouldn’t mind doing it full time,” Jim added.

Mike said they always strive to make their music better. They hope to put a CD together soon.

Their main gig is at the Plummer Family Theater in Knob Lick. They will play there the second and fourth Fridays of the month through December.

While they have turned down other chances to perform, they now want to start performing at festivals and fairs.

“We will try to do more local festivals next year,” Colleen said. “We have turned down a lot of work because were doing Plummer exclusively.”

Colleen said Plummer gets a good crowd of about 200 people. She likes that it’s a place families can go. No alcohol is served there.

“We see people of all ages,” Randy said.

They don’t just play Top 40 songs. “We do material no one else does,” Colleen said.

Randy said the band does not have a problem with egos. He said they feel like family.

Colleen said since they grew up playing music together, they have more of a musical connection and can almost read each other’s minds.

I am from St. Louis and worked with Mike for five years at ARCH and have heard him play on and off stage. He is an incredibly talented musician. Throughout my childhood, we have enjoyed the entertainment of the Plummer Family and now we have the best of both worlds as we enjoy visiting with Mike and his extended musical families. Just as the article states, this band is not high on ego. They have a passion for music and entertainment, adjusting their style to each audience. You are sure to have a great time with listening to their musical varieties as well as their on-stage "fun loving" entertainment. We are blessed to have such talent in our "back yard". Thank you to the Plummer Family and Route 67! We love you!
