• The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has announced that Mississippi Lime Company has won the prestigious Sentinels of Safety award in the underground non-metal mine category for the third year in a row for 2006. This award, created in 1925, is considered by MSHA and the mining community to be the most prestigious award in the mining industry. It is earned by the mines that achieve the greatest number of employee work-days in a calendar year without an injury that results in lost workdays.

• U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson announced that she has joined the membership in the newly-formed bipartisan Congressional Community Pharmacy Coalition. The coalition is dedicated to preserving patient access to America’s community pharmacists.
“In Southern Missouri, our community pharmacists provide a level of service that is crucial to meeting the health care needs of our rural population. They are always available, they work hard for their patients, and they should be able to compete on a level playing field. Oftentimes, the federal government forgets that our community pharmacies are small businesses, and it is very important that we do everything within reason to keep these small businesses open in our communities. This new caucus in Congress is going to take these matters to heart and help advocate for community pharmacies at the federal level,” Emerson said.
Community pharmacists provide over 300,000 jobs at 23,000 independent retail pharmacies nationwide. Community pharmacists fill 40 percent of the prescription medications which keep our seniors, our children and our workforce healthy. In many smaller communities, pharmacies are the primary health care resource.
• Texas-Based Harden Healthcare expands into Missouri
Harden Healthcare announced in October that the company has expanded its home health operations with the purchase of American HomeCare, which was acquired by Harden subsidiary Missouri Home Care on Sept. 28. American HomeCare offers services in 13 regional locations in Missouri. Missouri Home Care is one of four regional divisions of Auxi Health, a Harden Healthcare company. Auxi Health has operations in Iowa, Texas and West Virginia, in addition to Missouri.
“We are pleased to expand our home health services through the purchase of American HomeCare,” Mary Kaye Kramme, regional vice president of Missouri Home Care, said. “Once the merger is complete, we look forward to offering excellent care in 17 locations covering 66 counties in Missouri.”
Missouri Home Care provides a full complement of services including continuous and intermittent nursing care, as well as physical therapy, respiratory therapy and home health aide services. Current patients of American HomeCare can expect the care they receive to remain consistent throughout the ownership transition. The acquisition of American HomeCare will make Missouri Home Care the largest Medicaid waiver services provider in the state. Medicaid waivers allow services that are typically covered by Medicaid only in a nursing facility, to be provided to eligible persons in their own homes or in assisted living facilities.
American HomeCare was established in 1993 to provide quality, caring in-home services that enable people to enjoy happier, healthier and more independent lives. The company provides personalized care plans in addition to in-home care services, including medication management assistance, meal preparation, transportation, and grooming and dressing assistance, among others.
