Mary Grass, left, of the Perryville/Ste. Genevieve Industrial Training Consortium, receives the Missouri Community College Association Business and Industry Award from MCCA President Diane Andris, and Mineral Area College President Dr. Steve Kurtz. The consortium is comprised of 13 companies representing about 3,000 employees.
At its annual conference in Branson Nov. 7-9, Missouri Community College Association recognized Perryville/Ste. Genevieve Industrial Training Consortium with a statewide Business and Industry Award, for the consortium's dedication to quality education.
“The members of the Consortium are committed to further developing their workforce,” said MAC Business and Industry Programs Director Bev Hickam. “This award recognizes their effort to provide local training opportunities for their employees.”
This industrial consortium was formed in 2003 in response to a need for industrial training within Perry and Ste. Genevieve counties. Eight companies initially joined the consortium.
Formed under the auspices of Mineral Area College, the group has received an annual customized training grant from the state to help with its training efforts. The mission of the training consortium is, “To seek to improve availability and quality of training of the industrial sector of our community while reducing costs; and to provide a forum for discussing training issues among the consortium member.”
Training courses are offered in mechanical, electronic, lean manufacturing, leadership/supervisory, computer and special workshops and seminars as needs arise.
The college serves as facilitator and fiscal agent for the group and provides instructors and facilities for the group's training efforts. From January-May 2007, the group offered 26 classes with 230 employees participating.
Benefits of the training consortium are:
• Having training needs and curriculum customized for members;
• Multiple industries assure critical mass needed for training classes;
• More cost effective to do training locally; and
• Sharing of Best Practices among members.
Currently, 13 companies belong to the group, representing 3,000 employees. Chairperson of the group is Mary Grass, training coordinator for Mississippi Lime, and communications officer is Dana Viox from Eric Scott.
