Volunteers honored at banquet
Sunday, March 23, 2008
The Farmington Ministerial Alliance held its Volunteer Banquet on February 28. The theme for the evening was “Volunteers-Planting Seeds of Kindness”

About 80 volunteers attended this event. The group were presented with flower pots filled with chocolate kisses, with each flower pot painted with the sentiment “You are a seed of kindness”.

A special award of appreciation was given to Dave Hawkins, the owner Sav-A-Lot food stores. This was a surprise award presentation to Hawkins.

“Dave has been a true friend of the Food Pantry,”  said Pat King of the Alliance. “He has demonstrated years of commitment in helping the ministry provide for members of this community. He is always ready to help with storage, and at times also the delivery of food. He provides more than just staples. He gives from the heart. He gives and helps in any way he can. He has literally saved our bacon,” referring to times when the weather has caused a difficulty in properly storing food.

“Benevolence and Dave Hawkins are synonymous,” he added.

Other highlights from the event included the introduction of the new Director of Benevolence for the Alliance. Richard Meyers took over the position on March 17. He attended the banquet with his wife, Sharon, and son, John.

Larry Daniels, the new owner of The Factory, was also introduced . He was in attendance with his wife, Jeanne.

Pat King performed  “I've Never Seen the Righteous Forsaken" and "There is a Savior”, accompanied by his wife, Michele.

The message for the evening was presented by Dr. Peter Van Horne and was titled “Planting Seeds of Kindness”. Dr. Van Horne said that through “one seed of kindness at a time, we reach to people so that they might see Jesus in us, and know that they are loved by the God who made them”.

“You who are the volunteers are very special workers in God’s garden. You are planting very special seeds of kindness each time you assist someone,” he said. “You might be fortunate enough to see that person suddenly blossom and stand upright, or it might take some time for that seed you plant to do its work. But like the sower, we keep on planting those seeds, and God does his marvelous work in the garden of the person’s soul.”

He expressed his thanks to the volunteers on behalf of the Alliance and concluded by saying “I want to thank each and every one of you for your wonderful and devoted ministry of planting those seeds in the hearts and lives of the people you meet in the Thrift Store and the Food Pantry. The important work you do and the example you set for others is wonderful, and for all you do, God bless you, and thank you.”

Next week’s Farmington Press will introduce Rick Meyer, the new director of benevolence for the Ministerial Alliance.
