PARK HILLS — The Mineral Area College Cardinals and St. Charles Cougars picked up where they had left off in the second inning of a game which was started on April 8, but was suspended due to rain.

The Cardinals held a 1-0 advantage which was erased by the Cougars in the third inning, but a display of offensive power in the fifth and sixth innings helped MAC post an 8-1 win over the visitors.

The Cardinals fell behind in game two but fought back to tie the game in the fifth, but the Cougars pulled out a 6-5 win to gain a split with Mineral Area.

Matt Thompson scored the lone run on April 8 before the game was suspended. Trenton Sanders took a pitch for the team with the bases loaded to  bring in St. Charles’ only run in the third inning to tie the game.

Joe Cole, who threw the two innings on the original date was replaced by Justin Forsythe in Wednesday’s finish. Forsythe would only throw two-thirds of an inning before Kurt Vaeth replaced him on the mound with the bases loaded in the third inning. Vaeth struck out the next batter to get out of the jam, and he would go on to pitch the remainder of the game.

The Cardinals made the Cougars pay for a one-out error in the fifth inning. Seth Blackwell and Ty Craft both hit RBI doubles and Jimmy Thompson delivered a sacrifice fly for the first three runs in the inning, and the Cardinals collected a fourth on a second Cougars error.

John Tierney threw a strike to third base from his position in right field to gun down a Cardinal runner for the second out in the bottom of the sixth, but two singles by Garrett Oliver and Mike Hammonds set up a 390 foot power-drive by Blackwell over the left-center wall for three more runs. The home run ended the scoring for both teams.

In game two, Mineral Area jumped out to an early lead on a two-run homer by Craft in the second inning. Cole was the starting pitcher for the Cardinals and he retired the first nine batters in order, with the only exception being a single by Matt Macke who tried to steal second but was erased by catcher Drew Pixley.

The second time through the line-up was a charm for the Cougars as doubles by Adam Arnette, Jeff DeKalb and Macke produced to runs and a two-RBI single by Josh Farley made it 4-2.

Mineral Area tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth on a sac fly by Matt Thompson and a single by Oliver. An RBI double by Tierney and an RBI single by Tierney regained the lead for the Cougars in the top of the sixth, and MAC could only muster one run in their half on an RBI single by Pixley.
