Central to look at random drug testing policy
Sunday, May 11, 2008
Central Superintendent Dr. Dave Stevens said if the proposed policy is passed the district would start monthly testing of three random high students and two random middle school students who participate in Missouri State High School Activities Association sanctioned events.
The board will also discuss bids for bread, bids for a door replacement at West Elementary and will consider the handbooks for the 2008-2009 school year.

Failed dare program posted on Friday, May 16th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
In comparrison to the failed DARE program, this is a much more positive approach to an age old problem. It's about time the schools and parents take action to protect and help their children instead of pumping much needed time and money into a higly political failed program like DARE.

Demosthenes...Professionals in all fields are capable of almost anything. Have you ever heard of a teacher having an affair with a student? It happens all the time. Do you really believe there are no educators out there using drugs? Airline pilots have been caught on the job drunk, they are tested, and doctors have been called into the hospital from a party and showed up drunk. Truck drivers (I’m sure you don’t consider them professionals but they are) used to have a real problem with meth, they are now tested. Do you think we should stop testing all these folks because they are professionals?

First of all, I totally agree with Triple D...perfect orator you are not. Besides, you even spelled "demosthenes" wrong several times in your earlier posts. For one working in "higher" education you would think you could at the very least copy your alias properly and spell "higher" correctly. You ramble on with your pseudo-intelligent explinations and you really only have yourself fooled. I do not know of one single person that reads these posts who think you are half the intellect your attempt to portray. You might want to look up a former poster named "LOCKE"...it seems like you both have a great deal in common. You are both legends in your own minds!
Kudos to the Central Schools for doing the right thing! There are always going to be those crying personal foul. Procede with caution. Implement the program fairly across the board. Integrity is the key! Do not compromise the program's integrity for ANYONE....A Division One Recruit, a stud left-handed hurler, a first chair trumpet player...! Maybe other districts will also raise the bar!

I am a local teacher and can assure you that there are not many teachers you need to worry about. In fact, at my school I honestly believe we are all drug free....the teachers that is!
If I had to guess...I'd say overall in our local schools....teachers are 98% drug free or more. High school students are maybe 60%-70% drug free.
And for the record....If testing the teachers will allow you to also test the kids....I'm all for it! I'll pee in a cup to save our kids, wouldn't you?

Why am I not surprised that Demonsthenes works in "Higher Education"?

Demosthenes you are not the “perfect orator” as your namesake would indicate. You think too highly of yourself and should take the name of someone of lower stature. In your mind nobody should be subjected to drug testing. If I employee someone that exposes my company to liability either operating dangerous equipment, heavy machinery or molding the minds of our children, I want to be certain they are not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. One could argue that it violates ones privacy by doing a criminal background check on teachers. Do you feel we shouldn’t expose those who have committed crimes against children and let them teach our kids?

Demosthenes seems you need to learn to spell HIGHER, maybe it’s the drugs you’re so worried about the MAN discovering.

I work in highere education at a public institution. If the administration came out and decided they would do random drug testing, I guarantee that 99% of my colleagues would be offended. You do not treat professionals in such a demeaning way. You do not police people's bodies as a condition of employment. This is not a solution to the problem. It only identifies and ostracized the symptoms of a greater problem and does so in such a way that it trains our kids to willingly throw away the civil rights they have because those rights have been abused by the schools and we all stood by and let them. Welcome to Fascism. Oh... And by the way, you're not the Central Rebels anymore. You're the Central Yes Men cause that's what your parents made you.

Shouldn't the teachers be tested, also? What about showing the kids the teachers can REALLY be positive role models? I'm all for the drug testing, too many kids are messing up their lives too fast. Sure, it's two seperate issues, but it's worth checking in to. The schools should be drug free, TOTALLY drug free.

What a great initiative. I commend Dr. Stevens and the Central Board for taking a proactive approach.
Additionally, I would think that the teachers would welcome a random drug test, after all, these are the adults who are with our children the majority of their waking hours. Could be a positive statement in role modeling.
Again, I appauld Dr. Stevens and the Central School District.

Many are missing the point. This isn't about teachers, it is about kids. I have no problem with teacher's being tested, but it is just two separate issues. Students are not being punished, they are being protected. The best parents do not trust their kids. They remember they were once young. I hate to hear any parent say their child will or did not do something.....just like adults, we all can be weak and make bad decisions and do bad things. This may save someone.
Society has a drug problem. Communities have a drug problem. Therefore, schools have a drug problem. Al may not have said it exactly right, but he has the right idea. Many students get lost in the shuffle at school. School they think, does nothing for them. Adults know this to not be true, but kids do not see it that way. Why not intervene before there is a problem. Give kids an out to drug use. They can tell peers "I might get tested, better not participate". Helps with peer pressure.

TO: 'TEACHER': I am for the drug testing, anything that helps our children. But that should also mean testing of the teachers. They are no better than our kids, and shouldn't be treated as if they are, right? So, if you really are a teacher you should agree what you, yourself said. Nothing to hide, don't worry! Let's weed out the teachers with drug problems, we all know they exist!!

How can 'All in Al' say most kids that do drugs are the ones not invovled in sports, etc? This is NOT always true! I seem to remember when I was in school (which wasn't that long ago) a lot of the football players bragged about where they scored their drugs cheaper! Just because a kid isn't interested is sports doesn't make him/her a druggy! There are other 'positive habits' other than sports that families can back their kids with. I'm sure a lot of star players' parents caught them smoking pot.
I am also for the random drug tests, I don't want my son around any kids who do that, that's not what he's there for. But the teachers should also be tested. They shouldn't be above all of that!

You are right on the money with your comments.
How could anyone be opposed to this?
I would like to see it in all the schools.

At 14, I could have been anything, I could have taken on the world. I became one of the (bad seed) kids who did drugs, dropped out of school and now nearly 30 years later I survive from one paycheck to the next. I have gotten beyond the drugs, I often wonder what Id become had I been clean all along or had someone stop me from doing harm tomyself back then.
We should push for an across the board testing of "ALL" students, get the ones starting out on the wrong foot (on drugs or alcohol) help for their problems before they become a liability to the community and a heartbreak to those who care about them.
Most kids involved in sports are upstanding kids with families that care and back them in positive habits.
Most kids who do drugs are those not involved in any esteem building activities (sports, etc.), they are sitting idle with nothing to occupy their time which allows them time to get in trouble with things they should not be doing. I say mandatory random tests for all and rehab programs for those found using.
