FARMINGTON — The Farmington and De Soto baseball teams squared off in the third of four quarterfinal games scheduled in the Class 3, District 2 tournament at Wilson-Rozier Park on Saturday, but sloppy weather would not permit the contest to be completed.

The sixth-seeded Dragons carried a 7-3 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning after rallying to score seven unanswered runs. Rain and lightning forced an hour-long delay after Knights pitcher Isaac Armstrong was hit by a pitch, and the contest was ultimately suspended.

Farmington will resume batting at 4:30 p.m. on Monday with no outs and a runner at first base. The fourth opening-round contest between Central and Ste. Genevieve will follow after it was subsequently postponed.

The Knights built a 3-0 lead on single tallies in each of the first three innings. Nick Baker doubled home Armstrong following a two-out single in the first, and Ethan Bullard scored on a Mike Standfuss triple in the second.

Farmington picked up an unearned run in the third on an infield hit from Bryan Krause, but a combination of walks and defensive miscues helped De Soto respond in the fourth.

Travis McComack slammed a RBI triple off the center-field fence after Kaileb Armbruster reached on an error to begin the frame. Brandon O’Day made it 3-2 with a sacrifice fly, and De Soto drew even on a RBI double by Jarrett Smith.

Dragons starter Neal Finch worked his first scoreless frame during the bottom of the fourth, and received the lead when his teammates crossed the plate four times in the fifth.

Armstrong, who retired his first eight batters faced, walked three straight as the rain intensified. O’Day then delivered a timely two-run single to center. A wild pitch gave De Soto a 6-3 advantage, and another RBI double by Smith capped the big inning.
