FARMINGTON — The Class 3, District 1 track meet was held on Saturday, and for the most part missing the afternoon deluge. The Sikeston boys team captured first as did the Festus girls team. Athletes finishing in the top four of each event qualify to participate in the sectional meet on Friday at Ste. Genevieve. (See full list below.)

The Potosi Trojans placed second as a team only three points behind Sikeston which finished with 114. The North County Raiders took third with 79 points and Notre Dame came in fourth with 72.

The Trojans had 12 athletes make sectionals as individuals and one relay team. Damian Beachem placed first in the 110M hurdles, Joe Skelton took first in the 800m run, Nick Niggemann was first in the 160, and Jacob Swearingen came in first in the 3200 meter run, barely edging out Niggemann at the finish line.

North County also saw six of their runners advance along with three of their relay teams. Ethan Salazar placed first in both the 110m and 300m hurdles. Jeff Wilfong cleared 14 feet in the pole vault for first place. The Raiders 4x400m relay team of Salazar, Cody Smith, Gary Bennett, and Mike Miller also placed first

The Farmington Knights were able to get six individual runners through to sectionals and also two relay teams. Ste. Genevieve had two athletes qualify for sectionals, and both Central and Fredericktown will have one representative each at the sectional meet.

In the girls meet, Festus sort of dominated on the 14 team field (boys meet had 15 teams). The Lady Tigers finished with 127 points to second-place Ste. Genevieve’s 81. Farmington was third with 76 points and De Soto came in fourth at 69.

The Hunters had five make it as individuals, and three of their relay teams qualified. Farmington qualified eight of its members to sectionals as well as three of their relay teams. Molly Barnes placed first in the pole vault at 10.6, a full foot above the closest competitor.

Potosi was spearheaded by Tiffany Johnson. Johnson scored 30 of the Lady Tojans 63 points with first place wins in the 100m, 200m and triple jump. North County was 3-3 between individuals and team qualifiers. Heather Rawson won both hurdle events. Chelsea Vogelsang won first place in the 400m dash, and the Raiders won first place in the 4x400m relay.

The Fredericktown Lady Cats had five individuals earn their way on with Brittany Davis taking first in the long jump.

The Valle Lady Warriors were involved on Saturday in trying to earn their way to state. They participated in the Class 1 Sectional Meet. Eleven Lady Warriors will make the trip to Jefferson City this Friday and Saturday to participate in the state meet.

Megan Basler took first in the pole vault, and Rachel Bruns was first in the triple jump. Valle’s 4x400m relay and 4x800 teams also qualified .

Years ago the sports guy at the Journal had at least three to four people working for him. Today he has one. Please do the math. In the spring, this is what they try to cover: Twelve high schools which have five sports apiece and the MAC Cardinals. Now add MABA and Babe Ruth and the Firebirds to late spring and thats a pretty high number for two people to make a personal appearance at each event. Donn and Matt are two of the most committed people to their jobs I know, but they have not yet been able to clone themselves. Also to What The Heck, I believe that anyone who typed that many names would probably make at least a few mistakes. Remember with only two people, they have no one to double check every name. All it takes is a phone call and the error will be corrected. Sherry Greminger, Daily Journal Managing Editor

Once again no true coverage and/or pictures. District Track meet held in Farmington Missouri and no one from the Journal came to cover it. HORRIBLE!! Instead they just take results and reprint them....years ago the sports guy at the Journal used to get pictures and coaching quotes.

FYI: it is a given that no one will go to the state meet, but the sectional meet is in Ste Gen...would you like us to send you a copy of the results?
