JEFFERSON CITY — The Valle Warriors made some noise in the Class 1 state track meet on its opening day. Friday’s round consisted of mostly preliminary rounds for Saturday’s finals, but five events were concluded on Day One, and the Warriors collected 13 points to move into a tie with Albany, just five points behind leader. Viburnum. (see standings below)

The 4x800 Meter Relay team of Jeremy Abts, Stephen Bauman, Jacob Grass and Robert Naeger placed second with a time of 8:26.48 picking up eight of the team’s 13 points.

Bryan Kertz placed sixth in the discus with a throw of 137’8” for three more points, and Conner Abts placed sixth in the pole vault with a vault of 11’6”. Daniel Cabral tied for eighth with four other vaulters at 10’6”, but due to previous misses he did not qualify for the team point. (Team points are awarded for first through eighth places.)

Valle’s 4x400m relay team placed fifth in the preliminary heats, awarding them the opportunity to run again on Saturday in the finals. Stephen Bauman, Derek Fallert, Garrett Kertz and Robert Naeger combined for a 3:35.58 time.

Jacob Grass came in ninth in the 3200m run, Evan Miller placed 12th in the triple jump and Mitch Friedman was 16th in the 110m hurdles. The 4x100m relay team of Stephen Bauman, Derek Fallert, Garrett Kertz and Evan Miller finished 10th.

The Lady Warriors were only able to salvage 4.5 points on the opening day with all the points coming in the pole vault. Lindsey Manshack tied for fourth place with a vault of 8’09”, but she received fifth place points (3) upon count of pervious misses. For Megan Basler it was a plus. Tying with four other vaulters at 8’0”, Basler received the upper hand after misses were tallied to tie for seventh and share the combined three points (1.5 each) for seventh and eighth places.

Rachel Bruns finished 12th in the long jump, Kelsey Abt took 10th in the discus along with Hannah Kuenzel in 16th, Rachel Naeger finished 10th in the 1600m run, and Valle’s 4x400 team of Kelly Hermann, Marisa Koller, Lindsey Manshack and Lizzie McClure finished just two spots out of qualifying.
