Poker Run Saturday benefits Relay
Friday, June 13, 2008
The 7th annual Poker Run, sponsored by the Save A Lot Save A Life Relay For Life team begins at 10 a.m. Saturday from the Knights of Columbus Hall in Bonne Terre.

The cost to participate is $20 and that includes a meal and attendance prizes. Dale Hawkins and friends will grill food for the meal when riders return to the hall on Berry Road.

“We plan to leave at 10 a.m. with a police escort and travel south on Highway 67 to Stix and Steins in Farmington,” said Sharon Burr, an organizer of the event. “We had more than 200 riders last year and so we should be quite a sight. We will have lime green shirts to sell, too.”

As riders leave, they will pause to remember Joe Crump,  a member of another Relay team who was killed while riding home from a Poker Run that benefited the Relay.

“We will take a moment of silence for Joe and for Susan and Pete Aubuchon who were killed on their bike just after we had last year’s poker run,” said Burr. She said organizers always stress safety and they will do so again as riders leave.

After the stop in Farmington, Poker Run participants will travel to the Elks Lodge in Perryville, then to Fredericktown and finally to the Elks Lodge in Arcadia Valley before heading back to Bonne Terre.

Last year’s event raised more than $7,000. Burr said the weather forecast sounds favorable for the ride Saturday, but in case of rain, it will be held the following Saturday, June 21.

The Relay For Life of St. Francois County will be held July 25-26 at Mineral Area College. It’s a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
