Crash involving coaches forces Firebirds to delay road trip
Tuesday, June 24, 2008
FARMINGTON — The Farmington Firebirds ran into a new set of problems when the team’s manager crashed a rental van into a rental van the assistant manager was driving.

Team Manager Curtis W. “C.J.” Bilbrey crashed a van into Assistant Manager C.J. Zeller’s van when Zeller was turning onto Black Knight Drive from Columbia Street at about 9:30 a.m. Monday.

According to police, one driver slowed while the second driver ran his van into the rear of the other. It was a minor collision but one van had to be towed away because the bumper was pushed into the wheel.

Complicating matters was the 23-year-old team manager’s active warrant for an unpaid ticket for failure to show proof of insurance, and his suspended driver’s license. Bilbrey, of St. Louis, was arrested and transported to the county jail where he was going to be held on a $1,000 bond.

As players waited in the Farmington Centene Center parking lot to find out how and if they were going to Tennessee for the scheduled 7 p.m. game against the Union City Greyhounds, the team’s manager was being bonded out by his family.

Both of the vans had been rented from Budget Car Rentals in St. Louis. By noon, the team wasn’t able to arrange for new rental transportation so the decision was made to ride down in a couple of players’ vehicles.

Unfortunately, moments after the team departed from Farmington, they were informed that the umpires had been told the game was cancelled.

The Firebirds, who are currently last in the KIT League standings with a 4-17 record, eventually arrived safely in nearby Martin and plans to play two games against Union City tonight.

There is not a top notch college player on this team. Get real. The coaches are doing a poor job, and the players are playing very poor. Bottom line. If they were top notch players they would be playing in a top notch summer league. Not this one.

You have to figure recruiting this year was tough for a number of reasons:

They finished last in the league last year.
They had a completely new set of owners and coaches.
They got off to a late start because of the shift in ownership.
They have a young inexperienced coaching staff.
They hired a GM that nobody trusts.
Its not going to be any easier next year either.

To Hammer: How can players play without any instuction from their coaching staff? The players are not bottom feeders. They are good college baseball players. They just don't have any respect for their coaching staff. You can't have this kind of leadership and expect these players to perform. They don't have the desire. MAYBE SOME LOCAL TALENT CAN SAVE THE TEAM, and the other guys can be released. This would be a blessing to them I'm sure.

Please...I'm begging you management to shut this thing down this year before it gets worse. The distractions are unbeleivable. Something different happens everyday. It isn't a surprise to me that this team is playing this way. They have to wonder what is going to happen next and it's nothing to do with baseball. So, please, please, shut it down and try again next year. I have a feeling the players will shut it down for you by packing their cars and leaving and hopefully recover from this summer to forget before their college season starts. End the agony NOW!!!

Agreed that the team is run poorly. But I think the players are exactly what you see, average at best. Don't fool yourself, it honestly is the bad news bears from top to bottom.

The Firebirds are good players. Some of them come from top college programs. The one thing that seems to be consistant is the horrific management of this team. I have NEVER seen such an unprofessionally ran ballteam. Little League teams are run better! It is an autrosity to treat these young men this way. It is a shame to see such a great program run into the ground by bad management. Hold your heads up men, we know who to blame for your sour season!!!

Wow...this explains a lot. When you don't have your own act together, how can you expect to lead others.
