Summer Safety Fair Teaches Children Valuable Safety Lessons

The Madison County Injury Prevention Coalition held their annual Summer Safety Fair for school age children last Thursday at Jaycee Park in Fredericktown. 317 children registered and participated in the event. The next fair is planned for June of 2009.
Several tables were set up with various packages of comprehensive information to pass out to children during the event.
The children had an opportunity to meet Smokey The Bear and receive safety tips on: bicycle safety, personal safety, preventing lead poisoning, sun safety, food safety, head lice prevention, fire cracker safety, skateboard/rollerblade safety, ticks and snakes, water safety, poisonous plants, 10,000 steps for health, dental health ATV and Farm safety, Emergency prepardness and Internet safety.
The programs were presented through local organizations like the Madison County Health Department, Missouri Department of Conservation, the St. Francis County Health Department, Mercy CarePlus Health Insurance, The Madison County Extension Office, The U.S. Forest Service, Harmony Health Plan, and the R-I School District.
Madison County Health Department Administrator Becky Hunt said, “ The Safety Fair is a project which enables Madison County service organizations the opportunity to reach a large number of families with injury and health preventative information.” She went on to say, “ It is such a rewarding experience to work within a county that has so many organizations willing to come together to coordinate an event of this significance.”
Registered Nurse Teresa Clark said, “I truly enjoyed the opportunity to work with all the agencies to make this Safety Fair such a success. Everyone did such a wonderful job with their booths and the prizes for the children.” Clark went on to say.” I am looking forward to begin planning for next year’s event.”
Prize winners at this fair were: Ryan Souden, McGowen McCutcheon, Jesse Stacy, Izzy McCutcheon, Kaylea Dyer, Jerrit Hargiss, Craigory Crome, Ethan Orrick, Seth McDowell, Kinya Bain, Laysha Dominguez, Jacob Graham, Brent Turnbough, Issak Starkey, Ashlynn Heflin, Cheyanne Stevens, Ethan Rouse, Stephanie Salazer, Brooklyn Bain, Jordon Johnson, Ethan Shoemaker, Danny Clifton, Austin Clubbs, Taylor Matkin, Kolton Biesmeyer, Matthew Harnel, Kyla Whited and Justin Mell.
