Bekah and the Breakers
Wednesday, July 02, 2008
For now, the 2007 North County graduate is sticking close by to go to college and is getting some practice in with her newly-formed band, Bekah and the Breakers.
They will headline the Bonne Terre July 4 festival — playing 7 to 9 p.m. that night.
Bekah and the Breakers currently consists of Bekah, Shannon Cox on guitar/vocals; Colleen Moore on bass, and Kim Hendrix on drums. Mike Tawfall sometimes plays with them on guitar. On the 4th, she’s hoping her mom will join them on dobro.
Cox, who is a member of Canyon, is the only full-time member of Bekah’s band. He’s also considered her band leader, helping her book gigs. The others, whom she knows from the Plummer Family, are filling in while Bekah finds a more permanent bass player and a drummer.
The band’s music is primarily danceable country with some bluegrass and country rock.
While 19 might seem to be a young age to start headlining your own band, Bekah thought it was about time. She’s been singing with other bands all her life.
As a little girl, she played music with her parents, Mark and Mary Ann Vaccaro, her two older brothers and her older sister. They performed at Bluegrass festivals and at church.
She played with the Plummer Family on Saturdays from age 11 to age 16. From that, she learned more about music and how to sing harmony. She got a lot of musical help from Colleen Moore and Lynn Rose Terry, as well as her parents.
For awhile she was doing radio shows every two weeks live on J98 with Eric and Stormy Bennett’s band Road To Home.
Not long ago, she took part in the Junior Stars show on KMOV, beating out more than 700 young contestants. She also won the Bonne Terre Idol a couple years ago.
She played a few times with Todd Hulsey at Hub’s Pub before her own band was booked there. She’s thankful that Brandon Hubbard, owner of Hub’s Pub, has introduced her to a few people and helped her book her first two gigs.
Nashville names like Nick Nixon and Randy Davis are helping her out with getting original material. She hopes to put together a demo CD soon.
With her parents’ help, a music video for “Ghost in this House” was produced and it is on YouTube. It was a high school project. To see it, visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdjL9XIQJtg
July 4 will be the band’s second performance. Other bands playing outside behind Bonne Terre City Hall that day will be Todd and Derek Hulsey from 2 to 4 p.m. and Brandon Scherffius from 4 to 6 p.m. In the auditorium, Crossroad, a gospel band, will play from 2 to 3 p.m. before the talent show begins.
July 4 activities really kick in at 1 p.m. with the parade, which starts at Allen and St. Joseph in front of city hall.
All other activities will be held behind city hall.
At 2 p.m., there will be washer and horseshoe tournaments. The cost is $10 a team and players will bring their own partner or draw for a partner.
The wiffleball tournament, also starting at 2 p.m., will consist of three to five person teams at $25 a team.
Admission to the talent show is $1 for adults and 50 cents for children. Proceeds will help pay for the fireworks display. Donations are still needed for this year’s display.
There will be craft and food booths and a beer garden. Mario’s will sell pizza, and the Eagles will have barbecue. The Knights of Columbus will have poker.
There will be door prizes, pony rides, a dunking booth and inflatable jumping areas for children. Fireworks will be at dusk.
