FRANKCLAY — The MABA 10-year-olds All-Star team earned the right to advance to the State tournament in Jackson on July 17 by defeating Union in the district tournament in two straight games. MABA hit everything that was thrown at them with 27 hits in the first game for a 33-0 win.
In the second game Union ran out of players in the second inning with MABA already posting a similar score. Union forfeited the game for a 6-0 score.
Logan Winder was the top story of the first game as he struck out the entire Union line-up before Remy Wheeler hit his team’s only fair ball, a pop fly in the fourth inning to first baseman Collin Huitt. Winder continued with the last two strike-outs for a perfect game, throwing 36 strikes out of 46 pitches thrown.
Drew Harlow led the MABA team in hitting by going 3-3 with two home runs and seven RBI. Logan Winder and Keenan Johnson were both 4-5 with a double, Garrett Thomure and Conner Proffer were both 2-2. Brayden Krause finished 3-4, Jake Bridges 3-5, and Andres Castro was 2-5.
Brandt Busenbark hit a three-run homer to highlight a 15-run first inning. Busenbark was also the pitcher for MABA in game two and had struck out three of the first four batter he faced before the forfeit occurred. Stats are not kept for forfeited games.
SENIOR BABE RUTH
Pirates 16, Hawks 10
The Leadwood Pirates staked claim to half of MABA’s Senior Babe Ruth (16-18 year olds) title with a 16-10 win over the Farmington Hawks in the two teams’ regular season finale. The win tied the Pirates with the Arcadia Valley Cyclones at 8-4. A possible one-game play-off may decide the ultimate winner.
John Schnurbusch was the winning pitcher having fulfilled a true role of a middle reliever. Schnurbusch took over for Josh Akers after a double by Andrew Johnson led off the second inning for the Hawks. Akers came back to finish off the last three and two thirds innings.
The Hawks jumped out to the early lead starting with a solo home run by Hawks pitcher Jesse Williams. Mike Harp and Sam Miller both hit singles to score a second run in the inning.
The Pirates matched the two runs in their half of the inning, using five singles with Ethan Sitton’s single driving in both runs. The Hawks continued to hit the ball hard with doubles by Johnson and Josh Gann to help the Hawks gain another two-run advantage.
An 10-run third-inning broke the game wide open for the Pirates. A three-run double by Ryan Calvird highlighted the inning, along with a two-RBI double by Kyle Nettles.
The Hawks rallied for four runs in the fifth inning and a two-run home run by Williams in the seventh for the Hawks ended their bid of being spoiler. Akers struck out four batters over the last two frames.
