For those who followed Farmington Knights basketball in the late 1970’s, Randy Detring was well known on the court. Thirty years later, his son is carrying on the tradition in Oklahoma.
Northwestern Oklahoma State University announced in April of this year the signing of Tyler Detring of Metro Christian High School Tulsa to a Sooner Athletic Conference Letter of Intent.
Detring, a 6-foot 7-inch power forward, averaged 15.8 points and 8.8 rebounds per games during his senior year playing for Metro Christian.
“Tyler’s best basketball is ahead of him,” remarked head coach Andrew Brown of Northwestern Oklahoma State University. “He has a college frame and is a kid with a strong work ethic, but has never consistently played against quality players. I like the fact that he is a really good player and wants to be a good player.”
Detring had the nickname of “Bird” — short for “Big Bird”. His grandmother, Darlene McWilliams, lives in Farmington.
