DESLOGE — Whether to allow golf carts and other four-wheeled utility vehicles on city streets will be the topic of discussion during a work study session for the Desloge Board of Aldermen Monday night. The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

A version of the proposed ordinance that had received approval from the city’s attorney was discussed during open session by the aldermen on July 14. However, it wasn’t voted on because board members had several concerns which were not addressed in the ordinance.

City Administrator Greg Camp said the ordinance wasn’t voted on because the proposed ordinance did not address the new concerns and what was presented could not be altered. He said the point of Monday’s meeting is to specifically deal with aldermen’s concerns with the ordinance.

Currently the city does not allow the use of such vehicles on city streets. However, due to high fuel prices, the board is considering allowing them with certain restrictions.

The new ordinance first came up for discussion during a June 10 meeting. Approximately 15-20 residents attended that meeting to voice their support for the new ordinance.

Camp said at the time that scooters and motorized wheel chairs under 50 cc are already allowed on city streets if they are operated by licensed drivers.

The ordinance that was previously presented would not have allowed golf carts on Desloge Drive, State Street and Chestnut Street. The golf carts would have been required to have certain safety equipment and the owners would have been required to get a permit through City Hall.
