Just hear what Dr. Lamb has to say
Sunday, August 03, 2008
Residents of the region are fortunate to have the audiology and hearing services of Dr. Karen Lamb available close-to-home, saving the time and expenses driving to a metropolitan area. Dr. Lamb’s Audiology and Hearing Center, located at 580 Maple Valley Drive in Farmington’s Maple Valley shopping complex, provides a variety of audiology services. In fact, Dr. Lamb is the only Doctor of Audiology within a 50 mile radius. “We serve patients from St. Francois County including Farmington, Park Hills and Bonne Terre as well as from the Ste Genevieve, Potosi and the Arcadia Valley areas.

Dr. Lamb says, “After spending a year at Mineral Area College, I felt more prepared to enter a four-year college. MAC served as a launching pad for my college and professional career.” Her credentials include: a bachelor’s degree from Southeast Missouri State University, a master’s degree at the University of Georgia, and a doctorate degree from Arizona School of Health Sciences.

“Five years ago, I opened my own practice in my hometown of Farmington. I selected Farmington because being close to my family is important to me. I love the small town atmosphere and wanted to raise my children here. I enjoy being close enough to go to parties at my children's school and be able to return to work the same day.”

Working with local physicians is critical to successful outcomes for her patients. “I work very closely with area physicians in determining what causes a hearing loss and what can be done to help the patient hear better,” says Dr. Lamb. “It is a pleasure to serve the hearing needs of the Mineral Area. I love being able to help people I have known for years as well as new friends. Sometimes it is as easy as removing wax from the ear canal! I enjoy being able to test the hearing of newborns as well as mature adults. Testing hearing before and after surgery can specifically show how much improvement was gained. Hearing testing may indicate a possible tumor and require more in depth testing. Personal hearing protection devices are available as well as ear level monitors for musicians. Anything having to do with ears is covered in one place!”

As a Farmington native, Dr. Lamb is committed to “giving back” to her profession and the community. She recently served on the Board of the Missouri Academy of Audiology and received the Key Contributor Award for excellence in serving the community.

For many Mineral Area College alumni, MAC--as well as its predecessor Flat River Junior College--is a family tradition. Dr. Lamb explains, “I have had several family members involved with MAC in one way or another. My mother, brother and several aunts have also attended MAC. My grandmother, Jean Bach, taught in MAC’s nursing program for many years and helped guide the careers of many health care professionals. Those nurses are still providing health care services to us in our local communities today.”

“While in high school, I took advantage of MAC’s program that allowed students to earn college credit while still in high school. So, when I graduated from high school, I had already earned several MAC credit hours. Then, I attended classes on the MAC campus from 1990-1991,” reflects the doctor. “And, while I was not very excited to be at a local college right after high school, I have come to have a great appreciation of the year I spent at MAC. And, now, I understand more fully what MAC does for the community. MAC fills a large gap for the Mineral Area community. First, the fact that MAC offers quality higher education at an affordable price is amazing. Then, extended opportunities through MAC’s nursing and teaching programs is indicative of MAC’s dedication to giving the most options for community members. The Mineral Area Council on the Arts and MAC’s Music and Theatre Departments add such a nice cultural touch to the community. I especially enjoy attending the theatre activities and the art shows. The Arts Council expands the fine arts experiences of our children by offering a wonderful opportunity with its annual Art Show.”

Dr. Lamb confirms MAC’s reputation for remarkable faculty and memorable learning experiences as she recalls, “The most memorable MAC experiences I had were in Mr. Scobee’s biology class. His enthusiasm for the information he wanted his students to learn was contagious. He made learning about wildflowers and local animals so exciting. Mr. Scobee was extremely creative in his desire to make learning fun and memorable. Seeing him ride around the campus on roller skates and dressed like a monk just to help us remember that Mendel was the first to cross-breed peas shows how he made learning fun. It is the dedication and love of learning from teachers like Mr. Scobee who make MAC the successful learning institution that it is today. In fact, I still have Mr. Scobee’s homemade book with his footprint on the cover!”

Dr. Lamb invites Mineral Area College and Flat River Junior College alumni to phone her office toll-free at 1-866-757-4327 for any hearing or audiology needs, information or questions.
