The IRS tells us that there are still people who have not filed for their Economic Stimulus Payment as of July 1.  Are you one of them?  The following table shows an estimated number of folks in the 18 counties that the SEMO AAA serves who could be eligible for up to a $600 payment from the Federal Government who have not filed for it as yet.  For people who have no tax liability or no tax filing requirement, there is a minimum payment of $300 ($600 for married couples), plus the $300 for each qualifying child.

The Internal Revenue Service says retirees, disabled veterans and low-wage workers are eligible but may not know it, or may think it is too late to get a payment.  Qualifying income includes any combination of earned income, non-taxable combat pay as well as certain payments from Social Security, Veterans Affairs and Railroad Retirement.  However dividends, interest, capital gains and SSI do not count as qualifying income.

If you have not filed yet there is still time (until October 15), here's how:  get a 1040A form (you can get one at www.irs.gov or call SEMO AAA at 1-800-392-8771 and ask for Jackie or Ruth). Complete the basic information, name, address, social security number, dependants if any, amount of qualifying income (which must be $3000 or more), direct deposit information and signatures.

The IRS emphasizes that people with no filing requirement who turn in a tax return to qualify for the stimulus payment will NOT get a tax bill.  People in this category will not owe money because of the stimulus payment.  Additionally the IRS emphasizes the stimulus payments will not count toward or negatively impact any other income-based government benefits, such as food stamps and other programs if spent within two months of receiving it.  So, when you get it be sure to go out and spend it…surely there's something you need or want.  Please don't let this opportunity pass you by, it's a gift and we encourage each of you to take advantage of it.  If you have questions please call toll-free 1-800-392-8771.
