BEIJING (AP) — China’s Yang Xiuli flipped her first four opponents then won in an overtime decision over Cuba’s Yalennis Castillo to take the gold medal in the women’s 78-kilogram division Thursday, her country’s second gold in judo.

Yang and Castillo fought to a 1-1 draw at the end of the regulation five minutes, then traded ineffective throws to force a judges’ decision, which Yang won amid roaring cheers from the home-country crowd.

Winning bronze were South Korea’s Jeong Gyeong-mi, who pinned Brazil’s Edinanci Silva, and Stephanie Possamai of France, with a waza ari over Spain’s Esther San Miguel.

Judo awards two bronze medals in each weight class.
