PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Brett Myers tossed seven gritty innings, Jimmy Rollins had three hits and two RBIs, and the Philadelphia Phillies completed their first four-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 23 years with a 5-0 win Monday night.
Philadelphia remained a half-game behind the NL East-leading New York Mets with its eighth victory in 10 games since losing four straight at Dodger Stadium. The Mets visit Tuesday for a two-game set.
It was the Phillies’ first four-game sweep over the Dodgers since Aug. 29 to Sept. 1, 1985, at Los Angeles. Philadelphia had never swept the Dodgers in a four-game series at home.
Coming off his first shutout in four years, Myers (7-10) ran his scoreless innings streak to 16. He allowed nine hits, struck out eight and walked three.
J.C. Romero worked the eighth and Clay Condrey finished the 13-hitter. Only two teams have had more hits without scoring a run in a nine-inning game: The New York Giants got 14 hits in a 7-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Sept. 14, 1913, and the Cleveland Indians had 14 hits in a 9-0 loss to the Washington Senators on July 10, 1928.
Dodgers starter Chad Billingsley (12-10) gave up three runs and seven hits in six innings.
Mets 9, Astros 1
NEW YORK (AP) — Carlos Delgado hit a pair of three-run homers and Mike Pelfrey pitched his second straight complete game, leading New York over Houston.
Jose Reyes also had a big night at the plate, and Pelfrey came within two outs of his first major league shutout. The six-hitter followed his first career complete game, when he allowed three hits in a 6-3 victory over Atlanta last Wednesday.
With a crowd of 49,791 chanting his name, Pelfrey (13-8) became the first Mets pitcher with consecutive complete-game wins since Bret Saberhagen in 1995.
Delgado’s homer in the first off Brian Moehler (9-5) barely sneaked over the wall in the left-field corner, but his drive off Wesley Wright in the seventh cleared the 410-foot sign in center.
New York put starter John Maine on the disabled list. He is out for at least three weeks with a bone spur in his right shoulder.
Cubs 12, Pirates 3
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Aramis Ramirez hit a three-run homer and Chicago beat Pittsburgh to improve baseball’s best record.
Two slumping hitters, Jim Edmonds and Kosuke Fukudome, also had big games as the Cubs moved to 81-50 — the first time they’ve been 31 games above .500 since they ended the 1984 season 96-65.
Fukudome, hitting .161 in August when the game began, drove in four runs. Edmonds had a triple and two doubles after going 0-for-17 over his previous seven games.
Ted Lilly (13-7) pitched seven effective innings for the Cubs, who have won three straight and 23 of 31. He gave up homers to Brandon Moss and Adam LaRoche but still handed the Pirates their fifth consecutive loss and ninth in 11 games.
Chicago has won 11 of its past 12 road games.
Jeff Karstens (2-3) allowed five runs and six hits over three innings.
Padres 4, Diamondbacks 2
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jody Gerut hit a two-run homer off Jon Rauch in the bottom of the ninth inning, and San Diego snapped a seven-game losing streak by beating Arizona.
The loss kept first-place Arizona three games ahead of Los Angeles in the NL West.
Trevor Hoffman (2-6) pitched a scoreless inning for the win.
Luis Rodriguez singled with two outs in the ninth for his third hit and Gerut hit the next pitch from Rauch (4-5) into the right-field bleachers. It was Gerut’s 14th home run of the season and seventh in August.
Dan Haren and Jake Peavy both pitched well in an entertaining duel, though neither got a decision.
Rockies 4, Giants 2
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Jeff Francis got his first victory in more than two months, Yorvit Torrealba homered and Colorado beat San Francisco to win for the eighth time in 10 games.
Francis (4-8) was winless in his previous five starts but he maintained his recent domination of the Giants by allowing seven hits over seven innings and repeatedly pitching out of trouble after giving up two runs in the first.
The Rockies’ left-hander, who has won his last four starts against San Francisco, worked out of bases-loaded jam with no outs in the third and benefited from a pair of double plays.
Manuel Corpas threw a scoreless eighth and Brian Fuentes pitched a perfect ninth for his 26th save in 30 chances.
Randy Winn went 3-for-4 for San Francisco, which had its season-high five-game winning streak snapped. It was only the Giants’ second loss in their last nine games against teams within their own division.
Matt Cain (8-10) allowed three runs in six innings.
