• The lower portion of the lighted football scoreboard was put in place in preparation for the football game with Crystal City. United Bank donated the lower portion, which would tell the number of downs and yardage to go.

• Roberta Lacey and Joe Barnhouse were named princess and prince at the Doe Run Homecoming.

• Jaycee Bob Bone won the new 1968 Chevelle and 100 gallons of gasoline by signing up the most new Jaycee members.

• Dicus Prescription Drugs advertised a Kodak Instamatic 304 Outfit for $36.95 and Eveready Radio Batteries for two for 79 cents.

• Mr. and Mrs. Ed Pipkin of Farmington celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on August 30.

30 Years Ago

From The Farmington Evening Press, Sept. 5-8, 1978

• Amy Johnson and Gary Hammers were crowned princess and prince at the annual Doe Run Homecoming.

• A new car wash was being constructed at the site of the former Giessing Mill lot across the street from Hall’s 66 and Danieley Insurance on Ste. Genevieve. The brick being used for the building was from the Monie and Lamb building and the old mill.

• Hair Designs Unlimited advertised a Back to School permanent special for $22 and boys and girls haircuts for $5.

• IGA advertised Eveready batteries for $1.79 for Alkaline 2-pack of C and $1.99 for Alkaline 2-pack of D.

• Colleen Kay, twelve-year old country western singer from St. Francois County, returned home after performing several shows in western Missouri.

• Kaye Giessing, Alice Johnson and Helen McDaniel attended a seminar in Chicago before the start of the school year.

• Frank and Edith Tawfall celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

• Lees Home Furnishings advertised a 26-inch RCA Colortrak with Remote Control for $699.95 and a sofa, loveseat and recliner set for $699.95.

• Sapaugh Motors advertised the ‘88 Rally STX Haul GMC truck for $21,140 and a Sunbird convertible for $16,286.

• The Press Advertiser had a subscription rate of $13 anywhere in Missouri and $18 for out of state.

• Mark McGwire was continuing his trek “toward immortality” as he hit his 56th and 57th homeruns.

• Penny Bursac was honored as the 1998 Wal-Mart “Teacher of the Year”.

• Sept. 4 was proclaimed “Fielding Chandler Day” in honor of his 100th birthday.

• The women of the Memorial Methodist Church held a fun fashion show and luncheon as a fellowship.

• Showing at the local movie theaters was “Blade”, “Dr. Doolittle”, “Lethal Weapon 4”, “Air Bud-Golden Receiver”, “There’s Something About Mary”, and “Saving Private Ryan”.
