BISMARCK — The Central volleyball team executed its plan to disrupt the offensive rhythm of host Bismarck on several occasions Monday night, but the powerful Lady Indians made enough good plays to secure a 25-19, 25-17 win.
Junior standout Brooke Taylor was often forced to attack from difficult angles, as effective serving by the Lady Rebels produced errant passes and sets on the Bismarck side, but still collected 13 kills in the victory.
Balee Lorenz dished out 20 assists, Tori Henson served seven points and Megan Counts made four digs for the Lady Indians in a contest that featured a limited number of lengthy rallies.
Central rebounded from a rough start in game one to draw even at 11-11 on five straight points by sophomore setter Tori Boyer, who finished with nine assists and two aces.
Bismarck answered behind a service streak from senior Holly Blunt, and regained a 19-13 advantage when two steady digs from Harley Cadwell led to a second straight middle kill from Taylor.
Central received a breakout hitting performance of its own from junior Jaycee Haus, who knocked down a season-high 10 kills, including several spikes down the line. The Lady Rebels totaled 16 kills as a team.
Haus put away consecutive overpasses from Bismarck to help the visitors chip away at their deficit, but Taylor brought on game point at 24-17 with a blistering deep smash.
Central led momentarily in game two, and a deceptive second touch over the net by Megan Simpson evened the score at 9-9. Taylor overpowered the back row defenders for two more kills moments later, and the Lady Indians remained in front from there.
A pivotal point saw Blunt connect cross-court with a second attack for Bismarck after her previous attempt was blocked. The Lady Rebels then allowed a good dig to fall untouched between players at 16-12.
Alicia Sebastian paced the Lady Rebels defensively with seven digs.
Both squads have reached a busy stretch of competition that included 11 combined matches last weekend at the SEMO Tournament. The teams are each slated for more tournament action on Saturday.
Bismarck (7-2-1) continues its current four-match homestand tonight against North County, and resumes conference play against Kingston on Thursday. Central (4-5-1) will host Clearwater tonight.
