Churches and organizations are joining together for a good cause in time for the holidays.

The annual Help the Hungry Bake Sale is again raising money for the two food pantries in Farmington. The event also helps collect canned foods. Anyone who brings in one canned food item during the sale receives 50 cents off the purchase price of a baked good item.

Chris Landrum is one of the organizers for the bake sale and says that “it is a combined effort for the community and churches to help those in need.”

Several churches and civic organizations are involved in the project this year. Two new groups joining this year are the Federated Women and Parents as Teachers. The Parents as Teachers will be hosting a free cookie decorating activity for kids.

There are about 10 different booths for baked goods, and an international booth as well as grandma’s kitchen which will offer jams and jellies.

“Six sponsors partnered with the Farmington Chamber of Commerce to help donate items and advertise. It also helps with the food drive in December where the Chamber of Commerce collects canned items for the food pantries,” Landrum explained.

There are many activities included in the bake sale. There will be both a silent and live auction, a cooking demonstration, a local choir, a holiday raffle, as well as a cafe for everyone to enjoy breakfast and lunch, with carryout chili also available.

“The need is greater than ever now especially with the economy,” Landrum added.

The annual bake sale to help the local food pantries will be Nov. 22 beginning at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph’s gym in Farmington. Anyone wanting to donate items can call Landrum at 760-5207, or Artie Henson at 756-1362.
