By now, many people have heard of "Kids Count" or have seen our brochures requesting the community's support on February 3, 2009 regarding Proposition 1. "Kids Count" made its debut at the annual Fredericktown Fire Department Chili Cook-Off in October. Many concerned citizens, teachers, and other faculty members were present to hand out informational brochures and answer the public's questions regarding our Fredericktown School District.
At the beginning of this 2008-2009 school year, the Fredericktown Board of Education asked a group of local volunteers to serve on a panel so that community ideas and suggestions could be adapted into decisions regarding school district funding, improvements, and maintenance. After several panel meetings, "Kids Count" was formed with its initial focus on passing Proposition 1 on February 3, 2009. Proposition 1 will increase the Madison County Tax Levy so that crucial repairs to every school building can be completed and our children's' overall education experience can be enhanced.
In order to generate the necessary materials to inform the public about our campaign, it is important that we have funds to do so. Thus, "Kids Count" began fundraising in October. A Road Rally was a great way to start, and it raised $539. A B-B-Q lunch was served on Friday, November 7, and a Schwan's Truckload sale was held on Saturday, November 8 to support our fundraising efforts as well. Proceeds from the Bar-B-Q lunch were $1,630 and Schwan's were $602.
"Kids Count" has also scheduled future fund raisers. We encourage those who attend the chili supper to tour the high school. The extensive damage to the high school building is one of the primary reasons "Kids Count" is determined to support our school's needs. We'd like for the public to see the damage first hand in order to better understand the true condition of the school buildings.
The number one goal of our organization is to do what's right regarding our children's education. We are the community link to our school administration and school board, and they are openly listening. "Kids Count" is focusing on what will benefit our kids in the future. We are not concerned with changing the past. If you would like your suggestions to be heard, or if you have questions regarding our mission, please contact Alanna Francis at 783-7144 or Jennifer Penuel at 783-5321. Remember, this is our community, our schools, and our children.
