Stem Cell Research
Sunday, November 16, 2008
Dear Editor,

Eight long gruesome years of dictatorial rule by George Bush will end in about 10 weeks. The long nightmare is about to end. Soon stem cell research will be allowed to go forward, and hopefully find some cures for some of our major diseases.

There are nearly 400,000 embryos in storage in the United States at this moment. About 3% a year are burned up in incinerators. Fertility clinics freezers are bulging with thousands of unwanted embryos slated for destruction. These embryos are smaller than the period at the end of this sentence. Even when the parents agree to donate them, our “Intelligent” president and his Christian following say that they should not be used in our quest to cure diseases.

A lot of stem cell research is now being done in Korea, the United Kingdom, Australia and Singapore. Who will become the Stem cell superpower? All I see is the continuos “Dumbing Down” of America. American scientists have been going overseas to do their research, because of academic grants and corporate development money given to them by these foreign countries. The South Koreans are becoming experts with stem cell research while we throw Chicken Bones and practice “Voodoo.”

You will hear from the “Christians” that this is killing babies. Yet these same people will continue to vote for these Republicans to continue burning up 12,000, every year in the incinerators. Who are the real killers here?

Most don’t even understand their own hypocrisy. They just follow the dictates of their church leaders without thinking. You can rest assured of one thing, these same “Christians” would be the first in line when cures are discovered. Their hypocrisy is deafening.

We have a little girl in our family with childhood diabetes. If you think that you are being a good Christian by denying her the possibility of being free of this disease, then you are a fool, and I wish the worst for you.

Embryonic stem cell research can launch a new era in the curing of deadly diseases. With custom made organs and tissues. But science and intellect has been taking a back seat to politics and religion. For the last 8 years we have had an ignorant minority making the decisions for the majority. In 10 weeks that will end.

Bob Roney

D3 you are correct when you say Christians are not to judge others when there is a disagreement. However, it is a Christian's responsibility to try to show someone who is going against what is Biblical the true way. This should be done with love and not with hate or harshness in their tone. Sadly, many times, we Christians fail miserably at this. Me included.

TOTB...you just don't really understand what it means to be a Christian. A true Christian, may well have and express an opinion on a subject of any nature, however he steps out of his Christian skin when he starts judging "people" because they don't believe the way he does. A true Christian is never critical of others.

To All;

There is a great article in today's CNN online that details a successful implementation of Adult stem cells,
taken from an ailing womans' own bone marrow, re-engineered, and grown into a new trachea. No human fetus deaths, no abortions...

of course when people think the bottom line on their paycheck is justification of a just and good life, they are very often confused about a lot of other things as well...

I can only point it out, but can't change them. Oh well... maybe someday they might see the light.

Concerning ESC - something that I had forgotten and read the other day.

Remember, adult stem cell research hs had a 10-20 year headstart on ESC research.

always - Christianity is what you make of it... if your best friends are "the biggest partyiers" and claim to be Christian, it's their choice.. I'm not saying you have to be a stick in the mud, you can have fun, have a sense of humor.. but, those 10 simple rules....

thou shall not kill
thou shall not steal
thou shall not adulterate...

are they running around killing and stealing? or they out having drinks and a good time..

there is a difference.. you have choices.. but killing a fetus is not a choice... it's murder.

PoliSci - I have never really understood a couple of the lefts mantras. The first is 'Fearmongering'. Is the left really so susceptible to emotional retoric (as if the last election did not prove 52% of the population is) that any discussions with which they don't agree is labeled 'fearmongering' or 'hate speech?

Another mantra is 'keep our soldiers safe'??? For real? A soldier's primary job description places him/her in harms way. Being in harms way and being safe is an oxymoron. But, then again, this fits with the world-view of liberals - if we do indeed keep our soldiers safe, then war or even the possibility of war, is not an option since you can't have it both ways.

Back to the point of the post. As a Conservative, I have no problem with REAL science if the politics and emotion are removed. The problem is that liberals can't do it. The positions they take do not stand up to scrutiny if there are no politics and/or emotions involved. Abortion is a social issue and Stem Cells are a science issue. Only the left links these.

Obama will fund ESC research, and with a most gracious Congress behind him, look to end many of the ills that have long plagued our citizenry. Unfortunately for you, we're now the majority, and when we cut the Defense budget in half like it should be, end the ignorance that was the Iraqi War, and end the tax loopholes for Corporations that Republicans gladly supported it will be done. Gripe, moan, belly ache, and by all means pray, since it's what less rational people revert to in time of crisis, while the country moves forward. Just make sure you put your money in the collection plate when it comes around, the 'Christian God' needs money for the defense funds for all those child molesters in the Catholic Church. A true Deistic thinker has faith that if there is a God that 'it' marvels most at man's ability to reason for themselves, and would reward those who apply that reasoning rather than be led like sheep. Maybe if someone were to talk in tongues, or flop on the floor like an idiot it would allow you to better understand what reasoning truly is.

Well, Old Reader, I don't know where you got the idea that I had a miserable childhood. It was great. Typical happy middle-class 50's family in a small town, two parents who loved each other until the day they died and treated my siblings and me very well, and we went to church every Sunday. I had the ideal childhood, actually. "Judge not, lest ye be judged." It's funny that it's perfectly acceptable for Christians to judge us atheists, while trying to convert us all to "save" us, while going through their lives thinking there will be some big reward in eternity. All the while the rest of us just live our lives based in fact and truth, and most of us actually do treat others the way we want to be treated, with kindness, acceptance, and love for mankind. I'm sorry for you. I'm tired of trying to talk to brick walls here. Peace out.
Old Reader posted on Saturday, November 15th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
To alwaysyoung, I am so sorry for you. You must have had the miserable childhood that you speak of to have as much hatred and bitterness that you harbor and express. May you someday find peace, love and happiness that will shatter these hopeless feelings you have. Your ghost in the sky is our Lord and savior, the Father, Son and Holy SPIRIT, not a ghost. You are free to have your thoughts, feelings and beliefs as are we who believe. As for myself, I would much rather live my life believing there is a GOD, and there not be, than to live as tho there isn't and find myself in his presence when I draw my last breath and my soul departs to him to stand in judgement of my life.

melitsace...I have young friends in this area who are also atheists and are better people than most "Christians" I know. You and I are not alone in our realistic view of the world.

tiredofthebull...Learn to spell. I am not naive. I was raised Christian, but I educated myself and learned to use common sense and facts, instead of fiction, as I matured. You don't know me, so you don't know that I'm extremely compassionate. And my "Christian" friends are some of the biggest "partyers" I know. I, personally, think abortion is a horrible thing and would never have had one during my child-bearing years, because I'm a good mother and I love children. However, I believe people should have the right of choice. If it turns out to be a mistake, that's their burden to bear. And, the aborted fetuses should be used for SCR, to save many more lives. I'm sorry for your friend who had an abortion. She, obviously did not take enough time to think it through...her mistake. A "devout Catholic". hmmm...means you can do whatever you want, as long as you confess to the priest and say some "hail Marys", right?
PoliSci posted on Friday, November 14th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Bassslayer - I prefer not to lump an entire party into false, fear mongereing statements, like you with comments that we're Socialists(Oooohhh) or Communists(Reds!) that are susceptible to mass murder. That's like me saying that the Republican Neocons and Demagogs currently in office are Fascists and that since Hitler was a Christian Catholic you're all looking to commit genocide against the Jews again. And honestly looking at the South, and all those uneducated Rednecks running around in sheets(KKK) who are by mass majority Republican, that the Republican party is responsible for them. I believe in Democracy and that religion has no place in it just as Thomas Jefferson intended when he penned the Declaration of Independence. That 'God' be in general and refer to each man or woman's deity of choice. It's what the country was founded on, not fear mongering or the feeling that Christian principles have some privilege over others. It's simply not so. Using embryos that are going to be discarded, to me, is more divine in that the sacrifice would be for the sake of others. It's a small collection of cells, not a human life, and apparently 'your' guys have no current problem with incineration.

Where might it end up or where might it stop? just thoughts to ponder... things are a certain way on this planet whether you belive it's God's will, or evolution... they are because they are...

It is up to us as humans, the only superior species in regards to brainpower to take care of our planet and all of those that inhabit it. (Yes I'm going left here)

If we destroy it, what will we leave our children. 10 legged chickins so KFC can make more profit and no trees due to concrete and housing developments?

One MUST think of the consequenses long term to their actions. There is currently so much more at stake and no body can look past themselves anymore to grasp the big picture of the legacy we are creating for our kids, and their offspring to talk about.

Your narrow-minded view that a "republican" vote is the same thing as
destroying 12,000 embryos is delusional and insulting to
any free-thinking human.

Does the idea of 49,059 pointless deaths in our nation appall you?
It should, but that's how many people died on American roads last year.

How about 147 abortions PER HOUR in our country?
More unborn children were killed by their own mothers
in the U.S.last year than all the U.S. Soldiers killed
in WW I and WWII combined.

To begin the practice of "Harvesting" these dead childrens'
parts is to put a small, cheap price tag on human life, a step closer to
the day we wonder "what the 'green crackers' are made of."

New technologies emerge daily that allow stem cells to be
taken and re-engineered then re-infused into the original adult
donor - a win-win where no one dies.

Mr. Roney,
Once again, you've 'blessed' us with another episode of "Truth" You also provide evidence that
"the smaller a mind is the more noise it makes".

It should be simple for an intelligent man to
discern the difference between;
Politics (activities within a system of Government)
Progress (a concept of change)
Religion (a psychological artifact of faith),
Stem Cell research (a fledgling science) and
Abortion (a long debated killing of the unborn).

You've successfully muddled these fairly distinct items
into a pointless diatribe that proves only that you don't
really have a clue what's going on.

No one decries Progress, or "wish the worst for you"
to those trying to find treatments for disease.
Those objections are about whether or not a living being
should die, so that another one might be healthy.

Your argument about the 'unwanted' babies might as well be
used against the children now being abandoned in NE hospitals.
Well, why not, Mr. Roney? They're unwanted, full of life
giving tissues, ready for transplant...

Sound unreasonable? Unthinkable? You bet it is.

NEWS FLASH - PoliSci is just another elite liberal hack who believes it is thier job to inform everyone else how intelligent they are. Your beloved socialism and communist nature is responsible for more death and murder than every religion combined. Hundreds of millions of deaths in the USSR in the 20th century alone. Millions in SE Asia under Pol Pot. One of PoliSci heros, Che Guaviera (SP?), was responsible for the slaughter of thousands of women and children but is still held in high regard by the likes of PoliSci. What PoliSci would like us to believe is that he/she is a well polished, educated, sophisticated, tolerant, inclusive multi-culturalist who wants everyone to get along - as long as you believe, live, act and vote as he/she does. What PoliSci does not realize is the he/she is not capable of any original thought and has been indoctrinated/trained/conditioned as a bigot controlled by and doing the bidding of the liberal collective.

Alwaysyoung,

It seems your abundance of certainty and selfassuredness may be lacking in some very basic understanding.
I recommend you do some homework on the current status of stem cell research - THAT is what this column is about, not abortion.
As was once said about 'Astrology'
whether or not you beleive the starts and planets influence your lives, you can't escape the fact that you life IS influence by those who DO beleive it.
The same is true of religion, regardless of variety. Like it or not, you live in a sea of "Christian" (and other) values, and if you took the time to think it throgh, the concept of "Love thy neighbor" and the commonsense laws in the ten commandments can enrich a society, or even a single person.

In simple defense, I think "Thou shalt not kill" is very very clear.

To paraphrase Aquinas; "If Jesus Christ be truth, then nothing else matters, but if Jesus Christ be NOT truth, then nothing else matters..."

If you're right in your views, you have nothing to fear. If you're wrong,

well...

always young.. you are so nieve...

I'd love for you to talk to a good friend of mine.. didn't go to church, had an abortion, and it drove her to nearly committ suicide... and she knew the moment she could not tell them to stop... she said it was the most horriffic choice in her life and regrets every moment of it every day.

She is now a mother, a devout Catholic, and you can still see the pain in her eyes knowing she killed a baby by her choice.

She has one thing you don't.. compassion for others.. you are obviously so self centered that abortion is just another "option" to making sure you can go out and party...

Wake up.. think about what abortion really is... it's taking a life by choice.... I call it murder.
tiredofthebull posted on Friday, November 14th, 2008 at 11:00 am
Bob, first of all, there are certain things that Christians believe are out of our hands. Life, death, etc.. hence abortion is wrong, in my opionin a sin.. murder is the same.. a sin.

It follows the simple rule thou shal not kill.

Let's say we start with stem cell research.. what's next?

I find it interesting that no matter where in the world you go, you cannot cure a virus, cannot cure the flu, cannot cure AIDS, and cannot cure cancer.

Don't bash my beliefs for your own agenda. There are certain things you don't mess with.

As to your 10 week comment. you are correct. in 10 weeks we will have a new administration, a new "leader" with no leadership experience, and i believe a whole new slew of problems that will flare up that will make stem cell research look like a decision to order a burger or hot dog.

Obama does not have what it takes to run a country, so please.. keep calling for more welfare and stem cells.

All that Chrisitanity has given to the world... False hopes from the Jewish book of fairy tales, or the Bible for you less dense folks. Don't forget the Crusades, a shining example of think how I do, and more death and murder than any other reason on the face of this planet. The largest and most powerful corporation on the face of the planet in the Catholic church, and don't forget the Inquisition! Today they're mostly responsible for lower I.Q.'s and proud examples of what an 8th grade education does for you(-see the South). The reason why there hasn't been much progression, in this country mind you, in ESC research is because it's been bastardized out of religious ignorance. It's the same people who fight the losing battle that is Roe v. Wade who've constantly thrown a monkey wrench into finding cures to ALS(Lou Gehrig's Disease the mental midgets), Diabetes, and Alzheimers to name just a few. I find it ironic that the same people who fight for embryos that are going to be discarded anyway could have possibly saved their beloved Ronald Reagan, "Teflon" Ron, if it weren't for their narrow-mindedness.
alwaysyoung posted on Thursday, November 13th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
One further comment. Babies are not killed for research. They are killed because they are unwanted. So why not use the fetuses for research? When I die, my usable organs will be donated for transplant, and Science is welcome to what's left. I would rather see healthy babies be born and given to infertile people who would love them. But, unfortunately, too many unwanted babies are kept by the women who gave birth to them, and if they even let them grow up at all, those sweet, beautiful babies eventually become the dregs of society and infect everyone in their wake.
alwaysyoung posted on Thursday, November 13th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Mr. Roney has written an intelligent letter, with which I agree. Unfortunately, this has been turned into a forum for people who try in vain to live their lives according to the belief that there is a giant ghost in the sky who sees and hears all and actually cares about each individual event in the lives of everyone on earth. All because a bunch of schizophrenics who lived a long time ago thought the voices in their heads were this ghost talking to them; and since they didn't have the scientific knowledge we have, they believed huge weather events, freaks of nature, magicians tricks, and pure coincidences were "miracles" from this ghost. Then they wrote their stories and people were ignorant enough to believe them. When these current followers can't handle life, they give up responsibility to this ghost. PULEEZE! Our society needs to wake up and realize religion is crippling and will destroy our society, eventually. Aborted fetuses were unwanted children who would, likely, have been hated, neglected, and abused if "Christians" had forced their mothers to give birth. Then they would have grown to be abusers themselves. Abortion is a tragedy, but sometimes, a preferable alternative.

In 27 years of research there has been NO CURES OR ADVANCEMENTS IN SCIENCE because of the "experiment". It is time to invest money into adult stem cell research which has proven to be valuable.

I read an article that there is "MAD SICENTIST" who is looking for somebody that thinks they know everything for an experiment. I am assuming that you would love to volunteer for the good of humanity. It is very dangerous and you may not make it, but it is for science!

God also gave us science to use in a good way as well. So, WHY Pray tell me- why we as Smart God Fearing Americans can not understand that the God that gave us the intellect to destroy and kill could also give us the intellect to Heal! I am not saying that ESC are the only way to heal but like chemo and transplanting of organs and skin graphs etc it is a viable tool.

Maybe...if we open our minds and hearts we could see that we are all in this together and not everyone one believes the same. Even devout Christians do not agree on everything, just look at how many ways there is baptize someone from sprinkling water to ones head to submerging the whole body!

I do not disagree with you on using the already harvested embryonic stem cells instead of destroying them. I do however disagree with you concerning the issue of God giving us the scientific research skills so we should use them. I think there has been research for weapons of mass destruction as well as biological and chemical warfare research that the world could have done without. You may say, those things can cause harm to many lives. To that I say, I believe embryonic stem cell research causes harm to many lives too. I think we need to see more reports on the adult stem cell research which may lead us to all agree if it is better than embryonic stem cell research, then there is no need for embryonic stem cell research at all. I plead with all of America not use the name of God to justify what we are doing unless we are sure His Word backs up what we are saying.

It is not than I am against research nor even stem cell research, just when they abort babies to do it. They have proven that the navel cords provide much more than the stem cells from embro's. I do not believe that one life should be taken to save another "unless" the one dying for the other does it themselves. As for cancer research and ACS I could tell you much about them but there is not enough space to do it. I will say that after my dealings personally with the American Cancer Society I WILL NEVER donate to them again. To each his own, this is my personal experience and of other family members as well. Whether Mr. Roney is bitter or not is not relevant.

The issue of embryonic stem cell (ESC)is an important issue. Scientists believe they can be more valuable in finding cures for diseases.

Yes, other stem cells may have produced some advances, but the belief is the ESC could, could provide more.

As in all research it may take sometime for a discovery. Maybe there will be no discoveries through research with ESC, who knows.

I cannot find the logic in not using the ESC's that will be destroyed for research and we can debate forever the philosophical differences in whether to use any ESC for research.

To me the solution is easy and for people who don't the solution is also easy - sign a waiver now that states you will never use any discovery associated with ESC research to cure any disease that you may have or get.

God gave us the capability for scientific research -- we should use it.

Where would we be without it -- think about that!

The first family member I lost was a 16 year old cousin, who had her life cut short before she even got to live. The other family members were people who were taken all too suddenly from us, but at the time, were accepting of their fate. Now, I am currently watching my little sister battle cancer at the age of 30. I'm sorry that I do not agree with your stance. As someone who has had 3 MAJOR cancer surguries, there is NO WAY that I support embryonic stem cell research. I do not believe in taking one life to save another. I am for research but not at the expense of unborn babies. So Readthinkwrite, I'm sorry for your loss of family members, but there are many of us who have lost loved ones and who ARE suffering with disease who actually care about the right to life of others. There are better research methods which have been proven. The embryonic research is a farce to relieve the guilt for the abortions. To each his own opinion but my life nor of my family and friends is worth the stealing of another's life. Tis no greater sacrifice or gift than to lay down your life for someone, but that must be of your own choice and free will, not to murder for it.

gman & MsPatt- very well said. Research shows that adult stem cells can be more beneficial than embryonic stem cells.

Mr. Roney - you sound like a very, very bitter man. I hope some happiness comes your way soon, just not at the expense of a human life.

I have lost too many family members to cancer. If a cure can be found by stem cell research, then I'm all for it. I would like to think that anyone who has watched someone they love go thru all the pain and suffering of watching a loved one die an agonizing death would agree. Nice letter Mr. Roney.

No cures have come from EMBRYONIC stem cells. Howerver there have been successes with other sources of stem cells. Sources that are readily available and abundant. The Christian issue is using the embryos as guinea pigs.

This is a very controversial subject and feelings/emotions go very deep on both sides. My best friend died from Juvenile Diabetes 3 years ago. She was 46. But she wouldn't have supported experimenting on a human life in this way.

Let me ask you this Mr. Roney, when you die, will you donate your organs &/or tissues?? A pancreas can be transplanted. I'm sorry that the little girl has to deal with Diabetes.

Mr Roney you say stem cell research can now done with the new regime coming into power. My question to you is why hasnt it been done all along. There is a lot of research out there now that says that embryolic stem cell research isn't necessary. The research states that adult stem cells can be readily isolated and used from adult tissues. No human life is lost in this process. We often hear of the potential benefits of embryonic stem cell research but not about the potential pitfalls associated with them. Some of these pitfalls can be fatal. Adult stem cells alao have the advantage of not suffering from some of the same problems that are associated with using embryonic stem cells. If this proves true, then you and I can have our stem cell research and not have to kill embryonic stem cells in the process. We Christians pray for anyone with physical, mental or spiritual needs and we want cures to, just not at the cost of lives.

Let me sum this up for everyone,
Bush is Bad
Bush is Evil
Christians are Bad
Christians are Evil
So what your telling us is that Bush was a Christian.

Thank you for another Liberal rant. One question, who are you going to blame this time next year?
Bush will be out of office, Dems control Congress? We all know that "The One" can't be blamed for he is "The One" that is the light at the end of the tunnel, he is "The One" we all have been waiting for... Give me a break with the Bush bashing

Bob - Get over it already. President Bush will be leaving office then you can bow to your savior all you like. Your anti-christian bent is getting tired. It must be very hard for you to discount all that Christianity has given the world only to focus on the fringe elements. You callously disregard millions of people who let thier belief guide the hard decisions that we all have to make in our lives. What makes you the arbiter of all that is correct? It is also apparent that you base your opinion on fualty data. To date, there has been significant progress with Adult Stem Cells while Embrionic Stem Cells have been found to be unreliable. Why do you leave this out? Additionally, you make it seem that if you don't support Embrionic Stem Cells then you must want people to have desease. Are you serious? On top of this, in typical liberal fasion, you wish for the worst to happen to people who do not see it your way. That will likely come back to haunt you.

Bob, you are intellectually dishonest as always.
