On Saturday area communities will be once again canvassed by Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venture Scouts on a mission to collect “Scouting for Food” bags.
The bags were placed on the doorknobs of homes last Saturday. This Saturday the same scouts will return in hopes of collecting each bag filled with non-perishable food items which will then be sorted and distributed to the various food pantries in our communities.
This year more than ever the food pantries will be looking forward to the scout’s efforts in order to replenish and stock up the supplies that they will provide to their clients of need.
A few helpful hints to make the program successful are: fill the bag up and then place it in a place of prominence in your home so that you will not forget to have it ready on Nov. 22 and also be sure to place it on your porch or doorstep early on Saturday morning so that it will be ready when the scouts come for it.
A “perfect” Scouting for Food” bag is similar to the one pictured. It would contain: 2 cans of hearty soup or chili, 2 cans fish, chicken, or lunch meat, 1 can fruit, 1 can 100 percent fruit juice, 1 can vegetables, 1 can tomato or pasta sauce, 1 canned meal, 1 can beans, 1 can evaporated milk.
Please remember not to include outdated, damaged, or perishable items; they will not be able to be used. Also do not include breakable products in the bag for safety reasons involving the scouts and the pantry workers.
If for some reason your bag is not picked up you can drop it off at your local food pantry by noon on Saturday and they will accept it as part of the Scouting for Food program.
The Scouting for Food yearly program started with one scout who designed the program for his community as an Eagle Scout project. It has now grown to encompass the entire nation. It is a true testament to the Scouting program and the service that Scouting provides to our communities.
