Tournament week is already in full swing

Nearly every varsity basketball team in the MAAA Conference is involved in tournament play this week, and Monday night’s opening rounds helped several teams to get their feet wet with their first game of the 2008-009 season. Five separate tournaments will involve 21 of the 24 conference teams.
VALLEY TOURNAMENT
Bismarck 61, Bunker 19
CALEDONIA — It was girls’ night in the Valley Tournament with the top four seeds all winning their first-round games. The Bismarck Lady Indians had no trouble muscling their the No. 1 seed past the No. 8 Bunker Lady Eagles with a final runaway score of 61-19.
Putting up 25 points in the first quarter actually sealed the win for the Lady Indians as Bunker’s biggest quarter of scoring was six point in the second quarter.
Brooke Taylor led the way with 27 points and 13 rebounds, and Holly Blunt finished with 14 points. Taylor made the only three-pointer in the game.
Bismarck will take on Viburnum in the semi-finals on Thursday, and Bunker will play Kingston on Wednesday in the consolation semi-finals.

Viburnum 41, Kingston 30
In the second game of the evening, the No. 5 seed Kingston Lady Cougars fell to the No. 4 seed Viburnum Lady Jays in the closest game of the girls opening round by a score of 41-30.
Becky Brown led the Lady Cougars with 15 points, Jacee Missey was next with six points, Miranda Politte scored four, Lindsey Govero three, and Brittney Turnbull two.
West County 45, Valley 23
The West County Lady Bulldogs played a very evenly paced game in a 45-23 win over the Valley Lady Vikings in the final game of the night. The Lady Bulldogs highest scoring in a quarter was 14 and their lowest was 10 points.
The Lady Vikings fell behind in the first quarter, but they were able to play even ball with the Lady Bulldogs for the next two quarters before running out of gas, scoring only a free throw in the last eight minutes. Jessica Crocker was high scorer for Valley with 13 points.
West County was well-balanced in their scoring with eight players contributing to the point total. Katie Gettinger led the way with 10 points, and Paige Forshee and Chelsey Kelly had eight points each.
West County will play Lesterville on Thursday, and Valley will face Steelville on Wednesday.

FARMINGTON TOURNAMENT
The Farmington Tournament held three opening round games on Monday with both the Knights and Knightettes sitting out until this evening.
The Dexter Lady Bearcats kept up their tradition of good basketball as they defeated Miller Career Academy in the first game rather handily 63-42. Sullivan and Cape Notre Dame were even at the half, but a pullaway in the fourth quarter with consistent free-throw shooting gave Sullivan a 66-53 win and a berth in Friday’s semifinal against Dexter.
Notre Dame and Miller Career will play in the consolation semi-final on Thursday.
In the third game of the evening, the Notre Dame Bulldogs pulled away from the Salem Tigers in the second half for an 88-63 win in the boys pool play. Notre Dame will play Oakville on Wednesday with Salem facing Oakville on Thursday.
VALLE TOURNAMENT
Ste. Genevieve 61, Crystal City 53
STE. GENEVIEVE — The Ste. Genevieve Hunters claimed the first win of the Valle Girls Tournament, defeating the Crystal City Lady Hornets 61-53. The two teams were tied at 44-44 to start the fourth quarter, but strong defensive play and good free-throw shooting helped the Hunters dominate the last frame.
Rikki Ritter led the way in scoring with 15 points and Holley Fox and Megan Schenck both score 13 each. Schenck made three three-pointers in the game. Olivia Russell led the Lady Hornets in scoring with 18 points, and she also made three three-pointers.

The Valle Lady Warriors trailed by a point after three quarters but played a strong fourth quarter to overtake the St. Vincent Lady Indians for a first-round win in their own tournament.
Kelsey Abt controlled the boards for the Lady Warriors with 10 rebounds, and Hannah Kuenzel and Kelly Hermann handled the scoring duties with 13 and 10 points respectively.
The Lady Warriors will swap opponents with Ste. Genevieve for Wednesday’s second-round games in the round-robin format.

CRYSTAL CITY TOURNAMENT
Ste. Genevieve 65, Grandview 25
CRYSTAL CITY — The Ste. Genevieve Dragons also brought home a first-game win with a 65-25 drubbing of the bottom seed Grandview Eagles in the Crystal City Boys Tournament.
The Dragons held a 46-15 edge at the half and were led in scoring by Brock Meyer with 22 points.
“We did all right for a first game,” said Ste. Genevieve coach Robbie Coleman. “I’m sure there’s some things we will need to work on, but for a first game we really played well.”
Ste. Genevieve will play Herculaneum, which beat St. Pius 91-57, on Thursday in the semi-finals. Grandview and St. Pius will play each other in the consolation bracket on Wednesday.
