Potosi has rough opening night against Sullivan

POTOSI — The boys bracket returned to the annual Potosi Invitational basketball tournament Monday night following a two-year hiatus, but the opening contest would not end well for the hosts.

Top-seeded Sullivan controlled the boards on both ends of the floor, and repeatedly produced easy layups in transition while rolling past the Trojans 66-29 in round-robin pool play.

Kyle Roehrs scored 23 points off the bench, and Cody Davis notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds for the physical Eagles (1-0), who committed just 10 turnovers on the night.

Sullivan built a dominant 20-4 lead through one quarter, and extended it to 32-6 after Tyler Garner and Daniel Schatz beat outraced Potosi to the basket for consecutive field goals.

Potosi (0-1) played its most effective basketball in the third quarter, but still trailed 58-27 despite getting nine points on three made triples from junior Zach Gibson.

Hunter Belfield grabbed eight rebounds for the Trojans, who will face St. James tonight at 7 p.m.

Kennett 72, Fredericktown 48

POTOSI — After a bus ride of more than three hours to Potosi on Monday night, Kennett proved comfortable in a frantic pace against Fredericktown, committing just eight turnovers in a 72-48 round-robin triumph.

Senior Jarvis Finley scored a game-high 16 points for the second-seeded Indians (1-0). Blake Parr corralled 10 rebounds in a double-double while matching teammate Trey Abmeyer with 10 points apiece.

Jake Sikes scored 15 points and Tyler Hagy added eight for Fredericktown (0-1), which trailed 18-15 through one quarter after Sikes knocked down three shots from beyond the arc.

A series of ball-handling miscues under pressure began to prove costly for the Blackcats, and Kennett used excellent team passing to carry a 34-21 advantage into halftime.

Parr netted a pair of putbacks as the Indians continued to pull away, and Finley swished a spinning jumper to close the third quarter. Kennett achieved its largest lead of 60-33 when Finley opened the fourth with a three-pointer.

Consecutive post basket from Hagy helped the Blackcats draw within 68-48 in the closing moments. Fredericktown will face North County tonight at 8:30 p.m. in pool play.
