Downtown Farmington will be celebrating the holidays with the annual Christmas Parade coming up Dec. 8. The theme this year is “Christmas Cards from Home”.
The festivities will begin early Monday with a scavenger hunt with participating businesses downtown. People wishing to play along may pick up a card at the Farmington Chamber of Commerce or a participating business. Each business will have a gift for the card holders or a discount on purchased items. Each business will stamp the card. Once the cards are completed they can be dropped off at either the chamber of commerce office or the drop box at Long Memorial Hall.
The winner will be drawn from the completed cards early Tuesday morning. The winner will be called and will receive a gift basket with items from the participating businesses. The businesses include Jennie Annies, Joyful Baskets, Botaniques, Plummers How-To, Krekelers Jewelers, Oasis Christian Book Store, Moniques Exclusive Boutique and Earth Mother Health foods.
The chamber of commerce is also sponsoring a Holidays Food Drive around town. They are accepting non-perishable food items and will be collecting through Monday. Donations can be dropped off at the parade Monday evening.
All the food collected will be taken to both local food pantries on Tuesday.
Rob Thomas, of Celebrations awards and trophies downtown, will be having a barbecue Friday at his store. Thomas has gained a reputation of being a great barbecue enthusiast and will be making barbecue sandwiches and have chips and sodas in exchange for canned goods and non-perishable food items.
This is the third year for the barbecue at the store. The meat is donated by Country Mart, chips are donated from Frito Lay and sodas are donated by Pepsi. The time for the lunch is from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., however if people are still coming in Thomas will continue serving until the food is gone.
“There is not a specific amount of canned food or items to bring. Even if you just bring one item or any amount of money you can have lunch,” says Thomas.
The Christmas parade Monday starts at 6 p.m. downtown near city hall. It will feature many floats and a horse and buggy that Mayor Jeannie Roberts will be riding in. There are many things going on throughout the evening.
Winter Wonderland inside Long Memorial Hall will open immediately following the parade. The display will remain open each day until Dec. 23, with the hours being 6-8 p.m. Winter Wonderland is a miniature perspective of the community and has trains running through it, with Santa and Mrs. Claus there for children to visit.
Some added features this year will be food vendors available for people at the parade. Botaniques will be having cookies and hot apple cider. Camelot Nursing Home will have a hot chocolate stand set up.
The Farmington Band Boosters will have a chili and soup supper at the Farmington Masonic Lodge from 4:30-8 p.m. The Farmington Christian Church will be hosting a chicken and dumpling dinner Monday evening.
The church is also sponsoring a Santa’s Workshop, for children to make Christmas Cards for soldiers overseas.
