Hillsboro captures third place, South Iron takes fifth

PARK HILLS — Senior Kevin Kramer scored a game-high 18 points on Wednesday, and Hillsboro rode a fast start to a 59-45 triumph over North County in the boys third-place game at the Central Christmas Tournament.
Hillsboro (9-1) featured a decisive height advantage near the basket, and Zack Winchester tallied all of his 10 points during a game-opening 12-2 run, including a pair of threes that were created on kickout passes.
The Hawks carried a 21-10 lead into the second quarter after shooting 8-for-12 from the field and committing just one turnover. Kramer scored easily on an inbounds play, and capped a patient possession with a jumper to create a 29-20 margin at halftime.
North County (6-6) remaining within striking distance by hitting from the perimeter, as juniors Derek Emily and Tanner Beers each connected three times from three-range range.
Baskets by Robbie Holland and Emily brought the Raiders within seven on two occasions during the third quarter, but the Hawks refocused their attack inside to pull away.
Cody Foster contributed seven points and seven rebounds for Hillsboro, which claimed its largest lead of 50-35 when Tyler Ludwig hit a short spinning jumper in the lane.
Beers and Emily each had 11 points to pace North County. Senior Stephon Martinez tallied eight points and seven boards.

South Iron 71, Potosi 55
PARK HILLS — South Iron shot a scorching 62 percent from the field during the first half, and knocked down 10 three-pointers on Wednesday afternoon to defeat Potosi 71-55 for a fifth-place finish at Central.
Senior guard Jared Middleton buried four triples and netted a game-high 24 points to lead the second-seeded and 2007 champion Panthers (9-1), who recovered nicely from a quarterfinal loss against North County.
Cody Smith finished with 21 points while going 5-for-7 from beyond the arc, and Will Sutton added 15 points with seven rebounds in the victory. South Iron built a 31-16 lead in the second quarter after both Middleton and Smith scored off consecutive Potosi turnovers.
Potosi (6-6) received an offensive boost before halftime from junior Landon Young, who drilled three of his five total three-pointers during a 16-7 scoring run that covered nearly four minutes.
Hunter Belfield brought the Trojans within 45-38 following his third driving layup of the third quarter, but timely threes from Middleton and James Cornell gave South Iron a 54-41 advantage entering the fourth.
Young finished with 20 points and Belfield tallied 17 for Potosi, which improved on its No. 8 seed and converted 12-of-16 free throws.
