FHS Basketball Teams in Tournament Action
The Blackcats Basketball Team lost its two games in the Central Christmas Tournament.

Saturday evening, the Cats, seeded 15, lost to No. 2 seed, South Iron 53- 23.

The Panthers remianed undefeated on the season, as they jumped to a 13-0 lead and led 17-4 after one period. The score was 28-8 at halftime. A 20-8 third quarter sealed the victory for South Iron.

Jake Sikes led the Cats with 12 points. Tanner Swope and Ryan Gifford had three each, Luke Cureton and Tanner Ward each scored two, and Alex Gibbs had one.

Monday morning, the Cats took on the West County Bulldogs. West County won, 59-39.

West County opened up a 12-point lead late inthe first quarter on back-to-back 3-pointers. Gifford scored for the Cats and it was 19-9 after one period.

West County extended the lead, holding FHS to five second-quarter points. The lead was 31-14 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Bulldogs outscored the Cats, 15-10.

The fourth-seeded Fredericktown Lady Cats moved on to the Central Tournament semifinals with a 48-39 over No. 5 Potosi.

The first quarter went back and forth, before Allison McDowell closed the period with a 3-pointer to give the Cats a 12-7 lead.

Early in the second quarter, Potosi cut the lead to three points. Lauren Henderson and Kylie Oertel then asserted themeselves on the glass and converted two offensive rebounds to increase the lead. Henderson had three baskets in the period and Oertel had four, as the Cats led 30-20 at the half.

Both teams scored eight points in the third quarter.

Fredericktown’s edge in the game came on the glass, where the Cats outrebounded the Trojans, 42-21.  Henderson and Oertel each had 12 rebounds.

Henderson led the Cats with 20 points. Oertel scored 14, McDowell scored ten, including two 3-pointers, and Megan Moser scored four points.

In the semifinals, Monday, the Lady Cats ran into the hard-pressing No. 1 seeded St. James Tigers.

The Tigers forced multiple turnovers throughout the game, and won, 53-23.

Early  in the game, both teams forced several turnovers and St. James led 6-4. The Tigers got their offense going and pulled to 14-6 lead after one period. The second quarter saw more of the same. Neither team got any kind offensive flow, and St. James outscored the Cats, 7-4 in the period for a 21-10 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, St. James increased its lead to 30-16. Early in the fourth, the Cats got things going and cut the lead Tigers lead to 30-20 with six and half minutes left in the contest. From there, the Tigers press stifled the Cats and held them to just a Moser basket and Liz Laut free throw the rest of the way. Meanwhile, St. James got hot from the free throw line and added enough transition baskets to pull away.

FHS will play Ste. Genevieve in the third place game, at 3 p.m., today (Wednesday). Ste. Genevieve lost, 71-62, to Bismarck.
