CADET — The Kingston Lady Cougars had high hopes of winning their first game on Monday, but they could not get the Arcadia Valley Lady Tigers to comply.

Trailing by two at the start of the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers denied Kingston second chances on their shots, and by making their free throws Arcadia Valley was able to pull away for a 35-28 win.

Foul trouble hindered the Lady Cougars down the stretch. With only seven players to start the game, Kingston had two foul out and two on the floor with four fouls with five minutes still left to play. The Lady Tigers were still five in number when the game ended, but their foul trouble hindered them from being as aggressive as they had been in the first three quarters.

Brittany Asher dominated the boards with 18 rebounds for the Lady Tigers. Asher also led in scoring with 21 points, going 10-14 on free throws.

Arcadia Valley (2-9) posted a one-point lead after the first quarter as Asher and Kingston’s Emilee Dicus matched scoring. Dicus finished with 12 points and eight rebounds to lead Kingston in both categories.

The Lady Tigers went up by four to start the second quarter, but four straight free throws by Kingston tied the game up at 16 apiece. Only two points apiece was scored in the last four minutes, with Asher breaking the tie with a free throw just before the half.

Both defenses stiffened in the third quarter as Kingston only gave up three free-throws to the visitors, but their defensive aggressiveness cost them as three of their players picked up their third foul.

Jacie Missey made a key steal at mid-court late in the quarter and raced the Lady Tigers defense to the basket for her only points in the game, giving Kingston the lead which would last until the buzzer.

A three-pointer by Asher reasserted the Lady Tigers on top again, and a 10 footer by Nikki Bone gave Arcadia Valley a four point lead. A three-pointer by Misty Guenther gave Kingston fans a hope of a comeback, but it would not happen

Free throws by Asher and a two-pointer by Bone gave the Lady Tigers a little more breathing room. Kingston looked panicky in the final minutes of the game as they launched several three-point shots that hardly had hopes of going in, but usually ended up in Asher’s hands on the rebound.

Kingston will seek their first win on Thursday when they will host West County, and Arcadia Valley will host Valley the same day.
