Kayser, formerly of Festus was a newspaper writer and had written four books. One of them, “How Could Cotton Be Hard?” she says she wrote when her grandchildren asked her about her childhood. She told a story to them about how her fingers bled when she picked cotton, and one of them asked: “How could cotton be hard?” Despite being inspired by that incident, Kayser says her books are strictly fiction.
Her fifth book is dedicated to a friend and two of Kayser’s sisters, who died from cancer. (Kayser has since had a third sister die from complications due to cancer treatment.) The friend, former Fredericktown hair stylist Marty Allen, had read “How Could Cotton Be Hard?” and had encouraged Kayser to write a sequel to it.
Kayser did just that. The newest book is titled: “Marty’s Sequel.” It was just published a month ago.
It is on sale now for $7 at Madison County Farm Supply and Melissa’s Magic Touch. After the $4 cost of printing, the remaining three dollars goes from each book sale will be donated to an American Cancer Society project called “Look Good, Feel Better.” The program helps with hair and makeup for people being treated for cancer. Locally, Trish Brewington at Melissa’s Magic Touch manages “Look Good, Feel Better.”
Kayser said there was not a program like this when she went through chemotherapy 17 years ago and she wants to do what she can to help this project.
